Windwaker's style wasn't to blame, it was that monotonous ocean and plot falling apart in the final quarter of the game

Starfox/Starwing was a thing of beauty on SNES, its sequels however never captured the success of the original

And as for the Zelda games... Windwaker was amazing. I know a lot of people didn't like the style, but they didn't give the actual game a chance... It was brilliant....
