Tyson Fury backlash

Tyson Fury backlash
A couple of weeks ago the British boxer Tyson Fury won the world heavyweight boxing title. What has been making the news over in the UK is not his achievement, but his outdated Christian views expressed in media interviews. He has said:

That abortion and homosexuality  are wrong, and compared them to paedophilia.
That "a woman’s best place is in the kitchen and on her back – that’s my personal belief."
Quite a few more, and claims that they are bible based.

There has been a massive backlash to these comments, especially as he has been nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the year award. This typically goes to the most impressive sports performance of the year (despite the personality part of the title). He has been called a "dickhead" live on air by a BBC reporter (this is unheard of), another BBC reported has been suspended for criticising the BBC for including him. The British Boxing Federation has asked him to explain his comments . He has also been reported to the police for his comments. At least one other nominee has threatened to pull out.

What I find interesting is the in the US these sorts of comments probably wouldn't raise an eyebrow, yet over here almost everyone is appalled by them. It is nice to see that these views just aren't acceptable.

Yeah, real shame that the thought police stopped him from saying those things before he said them.

It's almost like you're still allowed to express thoughts, and other people are allowed to express their disagreement, and some people just feel like the first thoughts "aren't allowed to be expressed" because they view any dissenting opinions as the ominous "pc they" rather than a whole bunch of individuals who each individually find the original comments so odious that they all felt the need to speak up.

Almost.  But in reality it's thought police.

Don't worry, my friend.  If this be the end, then so shall it be.

He's actually one of the best things to happen to heavyweight boxing in years and makes some absolutely fucking brilliant comedy.

As for this bullshit about him being homophobic, who the fuck cares. He's a boxer, not a politician. The only reason anyone suddenly gives a shit is because he's a gypo.

It does depend what country you're in, the UK and the US have different rules on free speech vs inciting hatred. It's a bit of a blurry line. This ties into the petition to ban Donald Trump from the UK.

That aide, normally the Sports Personality award is meant to be awarded to someone to look up to and inspire others. Tyson Fury has said that he is a bad role model for kids to be fair to him. No one is stopping him participating in boxing matches, but most people don't think he is fitting of the title. He isn't going to win anyway because of his comments, and even the nicest boxer is unlikely to win as the sport isn't popular enough.

Everyone already knows that the 'sports personality' award is a crock of shite anyway.
