Well, I was 15 when he got the job and kind of naive. He fought communism, my kind of guy back then. Also, still catholic and not giving leaving much thought.
But I remember 1992 and the speech he gave on the 500th anniversary of Columbus laying his dirty claws on America. He said, it was a good thing that he brought the natives the light of the cross. That was my ultimate eye opener. I couldn't muster any sympathy for him or the catholic church after that. He also was against liberation theology in South America, because it was socialist in his eyes.
Suffice to say that I consider the current pope a bleeding heart liberal, compared to his predecessors.
