It's nice. I'm not sure exactly why Smalin felt the need to create a new version, but it's okay.

Just listened to Berg's violin concerto properly for the first time. I didn't stick with it the first time. It's better than I remembered it. Maybe I was initially put off by the slow, depressing pace of it.
When googling Prokofiev vs Berg I came across this article. The author mentions Bax quite a bit, a relatively unknown composer as having similar strengths as Prokofiev. I've bought a lot of music by Bax and went through a long phase of listening only to his stuff, but haven't listened to it in a few years. I should probably revisit it. These ones stand out for me: 
Quite possible, not every performance of the concerto is created equal. There are performances of some of my favorite things that I don't enjoy...

 I must say though, I find the practise of putting water-filled flower pots on top of expensive electronics questionable. The BBC filming or not

It's always the same problem with people who hail new technology, they don't take into account the human aspect of it. Yes, you could have a Moog (sorry, mogue) instead of a room full of instruments. But then you have a room full of one instrument that sounds like a Moog rather than a room full of infinitely more expressive instruments that sound better. Would be pretty fun to play with though! |
