I don't understand some people's insistence that we conform to "animal" qualities, anyway. As it happens, we do conform an awful lot more than your average bigot thinks. But even if we didn't, so what? Why would "counter-animal" be in itself an issue, if there are no actual problems manifesting?

It's like when people tell me I should eat meat because (some) animals eat meat. But strangely they don't tell me I should go around shitting wherever I want, and having sex with anyone I feel like regardless of their consent. In other words, we should be like animals in ways they find convenient.

I don't get people who use "unnatural" as a point of argument. As if we need reinforcement from wild animals and shit in order to figure out if something is socially acceptable.  

I mean, I've seen cats hump each other in the middle of the sidewalk. Does that mean I'd be justified in just humping a random girl walking down the street? After all, it happens in nature, which makes it natural!

And ya know what else is natural? Cannibalism!

Humans have far surpassed what is natural. We form government, we pass laws, we invent things and create technology. None of those things are found among other animals. 

So we don't know if animals experience it too? So what?? That is not a legitimate excuse to harass, discriminate, and patronize an entire group of people. 

Don't be a dick. Simple as that.

I don't believe the figure about the 20%. I have never met a single transsexual who has ever expressed regret about going through with the operation. The effort required to achieve that stage is so great that it weeds out anyone who is not 100% completely committed. I have met countless transsexuals who are much happier, and more functional and less screwed up once they have transitioned.

The continuing trauma is understandable. Just because you come home from a war doesn't mean to say that you don't continue to have flashbacks for example. Continuing bigotry from society can trigger many bad memories, which are difficult to deal with even if you can hide well enough not to experience daily bigotry. It takes a long, long time to move on with your life. Surgery is never meant to be a a silver bullet. There is great care taken to let the patient know that they can't rely on it to sort out all their problems. But until they have transitioned, they can't even start.

I've heard something similar from people in abusive relationships. Just getting out of the relationship is not enough. People then need to change their behaviours and adapt to being in a normal relationship and even this can take many years. But the first priority is to get out of the abusive relationship.

That blog post clearly has a particular agenda though. It is mixing statistics that are unrelated to surgery, for example the 41% attempted suicide rate quote includes pre-operative transsexuals.

You can't take suicide rates at face value either when you're dealing with a group of people who are regularly abused by society. You could make any group more suicidal if you hassled them enough.

That bathroom is anatomically better for us than the westernised stall. Forces users to squat instead of sit which is nature's preferred way. It reduces CRC (colorectal cancer) which is one of the most common cancers.

I would not be caught dead shitting into one of those in plain sight of other people. God how unflattering. Why aren't there stalls round them?
