Do you believe in Evolution?

Do you believe in Evolution?
This video poses a serious question that is never noticed because people always focuses on the answer instead of the question.

Why are these people asking this questions in the first place?

What relevence does it have?

This man isn't a biologist, he's a politican. People aren't going to ask him if he believes in Gravitity, the atomic theory, the theory of relativity and so on.

This is a clearly a deceptive question to get his Religious beliefs because a large amount of believers in the US are Creationists.

RE: Do you believe in Evolution?
I agree.

I don't believe in evolution, it's just a theory.
I also don't believe in universal gravitation, the theory of relativity, string theory, or your grandmother.

In fact, you know what he just said in that clip? He admitted that he doesn't believe the bible. When asked if he believed the world was created in 6 days, 6000 years ago, he said he didn't know. You either believe something or you don't, he said it himself. He obviously doesn't believe it. You can't not know what you believe - the question wasn't "Do you know if the world was created in 6 days" the question was "do you believe the world was created in 6 days" and if you can't answer that question you are either an idiot unfit for the position of presidency, or you are a slippery, slimy, non forthright and dishonest person, possibly *worthy* of the position of presidency :p

People often misunderstand the meaning of the word theory as it is used in a scientific context, confusing it with the everyday usage which essentially equates the word theory with fact or hypothesis. Theory is not the same as a hypothesis, and even in everyday use I cringe when I hear people say theory when in fact they mean hypothesis. It's ok though, as long as they don't try to start a serious conversation or debate where they will continue to use the word and concept of "theory" (as the creationists are so fond of doing) way out of context.

"Random selection" he says in another related video...natural selection is anything but random. It irks me when someone outright rejects the theory when they don't have any understanding about in the first place.

Actually he never said that in the clip. He said he believed in God but didn't know, which is a very reasonable responce, it keeps it from bias.

But you guys are doing the exact same thing. You're focusing on the answer instead of the question.

FORGET THE ANSWER! Ignore it, it doesn't exist. It has no relevence to the point.

Why did they ask that question? What relevence does it have? Why not ask something else about Science?

It's a bias question.

RE: Do you believe in Evolution?
I am a nihilist, so I don't believe in evolution. I do, however, think it more likely than any other explanation I've encountered so far regarding the diversity of life we see and how it came to be.

Why would someone ask a question like that? Because they want to know the answer? Because they want to know whether someone holds the same beliefs they do? Because they want to hear a denial? Because their "faith" is slipping and they need to have their beliefs externally validated?

The problem to me with the question is that it enforces the assumption that one has to believe in something, and that evolution and creation are the only alternatives. So creationists are constantly trying to poke holes in evolution on the assumption that creationism is the default victor if only evolution can be defeated. But if evolution is wrong, there is still some other more rational explanation than some invisible, omnipotent being that had to exist in order to create us but somehow was able to spontaneously exist, as if that is somehow more reasonable than us spontaneously existing.

He didn't answer the question Brick-top, that was my main point. And you cannot take a neutral position on questions of belief, either you believe something or you do not. He clearly does not believe what is written in the bible given his response, and he was avoiding the question to avoid the fundamentalist christians stoning him right there on the stage. That is the reason the questioner laughed at one point, because he was also aware that the question had not been answered, and this is why he had to put the question to him *again*.
I'm not saying that it's reasonable to ask the question in the first place, I agree with his initial response that his religion should have nothing to do with his position in government, but he should have either stuck to that response and not pretended to answer the question with a wishy washy "I believe God exists, and that's what's important" or something along those lines.

You either believe something, or you don't. If you don't know what you believe, you're an idiot. If you choose not to state what you believe, then you're playing games. If the question is not releveant, don't pretend to answer it. Just repeat yourself that the question is not relevant (which I agree with in this situation).

I think you have all missed the the main point!

Here it is:-
Brick-top Wrote:This man isn't a biologist, he's a politican.
He didn't answer the question for that reason. No politician can answer a direct question with a direct answer (as far as I have seen)!

Some people believe God made everything in present form several thousand years ago. Some think the universe is 14 billion years old but we weren't made till several thousand years ago. Some thing we were made 14 billion years ago, God made life and let it flourish itself several billion years ago. Some believe God made the universe but let everything play out.

The vague nature of scripture obviously shows you can't make a solid decision. Would you feel better if he said he didn't care how God made the universe?

This man obviously doesn't know anything about the Big bang, radiometric dating, abiogenesis, evolution etc. However what if he doesn't accept young earth creation? Are you entitled to support something you're lacking information on? I was always taught to study something before you choose to support it. We know evolution is a well supported theory, but he doesn't know that.

When I was in highschool I didn't know what created us, was I being stupid?

RE: Do you believe in Evolution?
This is very confusing for me. Here in sweden we are tought evolution as a fact. Like you get tought about everything else, how old earth is, how math works, who won the WWII and so on. I don´t really know why you should have to belive or not to belive in evolution, do you belive in math? Do you belive in that you have to eat to survive? No you dont. Evolution is happening all the time, when a child is born or new generation has come to live. Just watch who bacteria and virus adabts for every generations to our medecines so they can survive.

For me evolution is common sence and as obvious that grass grow. Evolution is a fact not something that you just chose to belive its not like a religous stand point or something. Think its weird that you can make decision like that in US while here in europe is it common knowledge and a obvious thing, you are also concidered to be major wacko if you think the world was created in just some days and that its just 4000 years old or something.

For those people who belive that the world is that young, just check the radioation levels in some radioactive materials that have been active for 100 000 of years. Or in caves at those pillars that have taken milion of years to become what they are, growing one cenitmeter every thousand year or so.
