A simple Google search will tell you that the first line of treatment is typically birth control, there are specific types (low estrogen iirc) that help best with regulating hormones as a defense against pmdd. The second step is an anxiolytic which is probably what you're mistakenly thinking of as an antidepressant but it's actually just an anxiety medicine.
I still don't know where the controversy is. Please show us where this is a highly debated topic.
See what i mean... you read it and then you think your research is correct and you spew big pharma caca. How do you even say to me that I'm confused between an antidepressant and an anxiolytic? Really?
You are actually wrong. Drug companies ( lilly in particular did their damnest to ensure sarafem was the treatment of choice and it was indicated in 2 weeks per month low doses to treat pmdd.
You must know that in anxiolytics put you to sleep and it does this to some people even in low doses... its really hard to work and be productive like that. Would you want to be on an addictive substance that frys your brain cells 50 % of each month to treat a hormone issue? That is abuse to woman.
Birth control was an epic fail as well. The marketed product was yaz/yazmin that had nasty anti diuretics that ruined peoples kidneys and resulted in a bunch of lawsuits.
Lupron is apparently what actually works because the only way to truly treat the condition it is to shut down the hormone production, aside from removing the ovaries which is the actual cure. I dont know if you are aware but woman with pmdd have been historically denied ovary removal and forced to endure psychological abuse from the system trying to label this hormone condition as a psychiatric disorder. Some weman have had thier lives destroyed over it and some have comitted suicide.

It's actually listed in the dsm5 and this alone makes it a controversial issue because its a hormone condition not a mental disorder. Why the fuck is it in a psychiatry book? I dont see hyper/hypothyroidism and its reckless paranoia and hypercalcemia listed in the dsm so why target a womans health condition and try to label it crazy ?
And finally, feminists, has it crossed your mind that when you make a positive light light of pms and go on the human rights bandwagon and called it natural, beautiful-ish and permissible to be in a bad mood.... You are making light of woman who actually suffer severely as a result of being in a "bad mood" from thier periods. it is not natural and beautiful and peaceful for all woman. Dont ignore that fact when you go on the "dont mess with my period bandwagon". You may be advocating for your self based on your experiences but you are not advocating for all woman and especially not the woman who need it to acknoleged and supported that yes, some people do have a hormone problem with this and lets not ignore it by making it lovely.
So here my thoughts
1. Although thier is evidence that points to progesterone intolerance, it is still not fully acknoleged because drug companies want to keep it mental.

2. It is a hormone condition, but its in the fucking dsm? WTF there?

3. If woman want thier ovaries taken out to treat it, that should be their choice.. and thats what other woman should be advocating for... choices for periods. One size does not fit all, screw the rosy coloured glasses.

4 Feminists, some of you dont even know the difference between pmdd and pms... they are not the same entity, but your advocasy for beautiful blood makes it look like all pre menstual symptoms and bleeding is acceptable and biologicaly normal. This is wrong in some cases and some periods are not normal. And the attitude of butterflies and cotton candy commercials harms the woman who deal with demons, devils, chainsaws and eggs hatched by satan.
She thinks she's doing woman a favor...
