In the less popular book Harper Lee's "go kill a mocking bird's" main characters are older, and take on different roles in "go set a watchman."
In the book (spoiler) the Hero of Go kill a mocking bird/ Scout's Father Atticus takes on a seemingly darker role when dealing with black people. In that he is witness in hold certain characters back from achieving what 'scout' sees as a greater potential. This is done in league with several prominate white town leaders.
Right or wrong the ultimate reason for this I believe gives great incite to the problems we have been various races today. The reason being and the reason for the name of the book was that it was explain that not all slave owners were evil, but saw the black race as being 'young' when compared to the European model of society.
Here in lies our primary problem there is a fundamental difference between the natural social progression of the average African slave's soceity pre slavery and the average European. It is almost like the difference between how some of the people in northern Afghanistan live (like it was 2000 years ago/iron age) compared to modern life. It is almost like if you had a time machine went back 2000 years grabbed a whole population of a city or country and planted them in this arid reagion and simply told them to "live." So long as they could remain isolated they would do fine. But, because they are made to interact with more 'advanced' nations their values mandate that they circle the wagons and preserve and push their way of life.
In essence there is a 2000 year gap between the iron age nomads and western civilization, that can notbe gapped with modern reasoning. Why? because it took 2000 years of specific reasoning to develop our soceity, without that foundation there is no foundation to build on. That is why alot of people from the region wants everyone else dead.
Now on a individual level there are those bright and shinning stars who can live apart of their society to define who and or what they are as a people. Meaning they can assimilate into modern society without loosing their identity. this is true all across the board. but now imagine the opposite. imagine how much more difficult it would be to assimilate if that culture or nation of people were not from the iron age but much older social order something post stone age and pre bronze age. Then imagine transporting that society into the pre industrial society. then "set them free" with no mindset or social identity. Hence the idea of a "young race" (of people socially) To set a young race free without the 4000 years of social catching up to do is dooming that race to failure. All that can be seen is differences.
That was the idea of setting a watchmen. to set a consul over a towns population of black people and help them develop. Like anything else man does it gets corrupted with power hungry monsters who want to simply lord over others and you go from watchmen to the KKK in a heart beat. The argument was written out in the early 1950's and I'm sure some of you snow flakes are already melted into steam at this point, but the striking part of Atticus' argument is the social failing he predicted if they were not there to help black people come into their own as a modern society. More or less he describes what is going on now in the black community (or at least when I worked the social programs in it.) not to mention the levels of inequality, mass poverty and eventually rage and hatred towards white people. This all of this at a time when the US was rebuilding the nation of Japan for the very same reasons. Their 'assimilation' for lack of a better term was due in large part because they in mass followed the direction of the emperor and he was controlled by the government directly.
Now what do we do since we are well past being able to set a watchman? according to some we are doomed to fight another civil war. Other's say It will never get that big but tensions will boil over So long as we as a country allow every culture to maintain it's mandate of prominence. The idea of America not so long ago was that it was a melting pot meaning everyone unique edges/boarders were soften and combined with so many other people that there were no Italian Americans no African Americans no Korean Americans, once we left our country of origins and came here we sought to be citizens of America and to became american. (morgan freedman subscribes to this social philosphy as well) being and american was it's own thing, which is why so many Europeans even had to go through ellis island (to be come Americanized) because even back then we understood the dangers of having so many individual groups represented in one country. names were changed pictures were confiscated family histories forgotten and destroyed so that we as a country of immigrants would have a chance to forget all the B/S we left back in our old countries and could come together and just be Americans.
I say all of this because I saw someone ask when has a black man ever been seen equal to white?
I would say when ever that black man was apart of the fabric of what makes America great, and the white man is holding on to a social order or idea that does not have a place in modern society.
That said on mass I would give a different answer. Meaning if asked when would the 'young' black american community be seen as an equal to thousands of years of social development from modern white, Asian or even some arab communities.. I'd say almost never. why? because the community does not work on it's own. it only works as a symbiotic pair with the over site of another nation. meaning there are not 3 successful examples of modern black communities/countries who's government are not tied to crimes against humanity to survive or involved in war lording and slavery as it's core. these are counter even the most liberal of values.
It's not a failing of a race, as we meaning all races had these very same periods in our collective histories, it is just an example of the products of a young race socially when compared to the European/western modern model.
So why aren't black people as an stand alone group seen as equals? The same reason Koreans who support the Kim regime are not seen as equals, for the same reason white who support communism or Nazi socialism are not seen as equals or any other race who does not support America first, or anyone who only seeks to take from this country and not put back, those who seek to hurt or those who seek a broader national identity first. will never be seen as equal. The thing is 'young people are generally entitled to just take and have things their way and not play the game like everyone else.
As someone born an outsider (not white) I had to figure this all out on my own. it wasn't easy, but when I did. I learned when to fight and when to go with the ebb and flow, as a result have been able to navigate many multi cutrual relationships, a business, and family.
I say all of this maybe start a dialog on the 'unspoken' rules to society. As I still think we still need watchmen in our soceity not outside like in the book, but men like MLK who can change with in to bring alongside as equal share partners, rather than preserve the culture and seek dominate.
