That's only because dogs are capable of, but not constrained to, being gentlemanly.

My neighbor has a St. Bernard capable of turning any cat and sizeable fraction of the adult human population  into a single paw print.   He takes up an entire elevator car, and horses turn and bolt when he approaches.

You witnessed that fight?

And I know the guy tried to sue me for $3,000+ in vet bills. Luckily I had a room full of people who heard me tell him three times not to bring that dog into my house.

My grandparents had a big cat like that. He used to guard our plum trees from raccoons. That's not really a fight any house cat is going to win, but hey we found some bits of fur and stuff that wasn't his, so. . . good kitty!

As for the dogs. . . I think most very brave cats are likely to beat a lot of dogs. Dogs just don't get that level of rudeness, and are likely to howl and bolt. But you get a few dogs together, and they will divide and conquer, and there won't be much left if there are even 20 cats around the neighborhood willing to fight them.

I'll avoid blanket statements and just say war cats are, in my experience, bad ass. Spiky Joe walked the valley without fear.

My cat is an indoor only cat. She thinks she's fierce, but she probably wouldn't survive long out there on her own.

Haven't owned a dog since I was a kid.

I'm probably speaking out of turn, I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I just wanted to address this:

The era when this would have occurred was during the formation of the Solar System, when local debris was far more plentiful and collisions far less rare. Even now, collision events happen - just ask Jupiter. Gravity is still a major player.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Shell's cat Bella is like that. Plus she's the owner and sole registered user of the loudest meow of any cat I ever met - even when she's not doing it standing right beside a 'phone left lying on the stairs, with the reciprocating end pressed against my ear.

The LATE HEAVY BOMBARDMENT got it's name from something, just can't recall what.  Tongue
