Refugee thread!
RE: Refugee thread!
Well, TTA has shut down officially now, despite some effort to keep it going in some format. In the long run, it was the right choice. Sad to see so many friends didn't want to make the jump to this place, but happy to see so many did Smile

Looks like I'll be staying for the long haul now Smile

How so?

It was an act of vandalism.

WELL, I mean more so in the way of:

Choosing to shut it down in the first place? Was very random and strange from my perspective, but it was Seth's call. I don't agree with it, but I don't have much say in what he does.

Shutting down altogether instead of moving existing stuff to a new server? This seemed to be the right course of action, as many users didn't want their data being used, with a few asking to have it all removed prior to any potential move as well. Seemed like closing down altogether was the right way forward, in my opinion at least.

I've sure the new forum is going to be great, but this place seems to have a hive of activity and lots of awesome members as well. Smile

From a Realism / Hedonism perspective, yes. If a forum is a meeting place, this view makes sense... the important components (the people) move on to existing or new meeting places.  A political-realist could justly argue that if we could wipe all memories away there'd be no racism and the Israel/Palestine tiff would be a thing of the past... a past that itself would be forgotten.

Yet, from the perspective of Meliorism, no.  The important component (the knowledge and wisdom) has gone. The town council wanted to build a by-pass and some things had to go.  But there is a reason why even uninhabited medieval castles or Edwardian palaces don't get demolished.  That forum was an historical record, a reference library; recorded and time-stamped.  It had an identity of its own.

This act was more than vandalism, not just carving a love-heart into a tree, it was the destruction of the tree itself. It was the digital version of genocide... memeocide.

Like Alexander destroying the Avesta, like the demise of the Library of Alexandria, like ISIS bulldozing Nineveh, like the fire at the National Museum of Brazil... future historians will have nothing but a footnote and some salvaged wreckage to work with.

Aye, it's a shame no doubt, as I would have liked to continue on that forum, but here we are. However I agree some of the knowledge that was lost, especially the directories that had been set up, was criminal.

This points up the need for individual action. Nothing is permanent on the 'Net, so if you see something worth preserving, ACT.

TTA? What is the TTA that you speak of? There is only the forum that shall not be named TFTSNBN. Seth should henceforth be known as Lord Sethdemort.

... I need to change my forum title.

I must admit the task does feel like having to rebuild civilisation because some lunatic asked why we can't use nukes.

I most certainly am sad to see all the work, hundreds of hours from hundreds of different people just wiped out in an instance.

Discussion forums are interesting. They're like a mixture of a pub/bar and a library, but one where you can still see ghostly shadows of previous customers playing Pool in the corner.

RE: Refugee thread!
Despite purporting to advance the "cause" of atheism, Andrews has, by his
petty closure of the TTA forum, indicated that his agenda may well be the
exact opposite.

The TTA forum has provided a voice for literally thousands of atheist the
world over at various times, and contains(ed) a wealth of religious data and
links to hundreds of sites relevant to atheism, agnosticism, and disbelief.

I was always uneasy (still am) by the fact that for a decade, Andrews was a
radio broadcaster and zealous Christian apologist.  Is it at all possible that he
may again 'desert the cause' and revert to theism?  He spent 40 years of his
life as a Christian, making money from his belief.  Could he be making less
money as an atheist—as it's more than obvious it's only the opportunity of big
dollars that drives his particular cause.  Whatever it may be.
