ENTRENCHED
Hey,

A friend of mine made this game:

https://cmsgaming.itch.io/entrenched

I helped him out, a bit by being a feedback-board mostly. I helped with thinking up some events and stuff like that in the game. And the core idea of the game came from a conversation we had. All of the coding, mapping, scripting, pixelating, ... whatnot. All him. I'm pretty impressed by his effort and his result. Especially considering he did all that 99% by himself.
But it is a competition with a lot of strong competitors. So I'm helping him out in whatever way I can. If any of you like old-time indie games; check it out, and maybe vote for him in the competition? It would help him out a lot. I would appreciate it too. And if you have any feedback, you can leave it here and I'll be sure to get it back to him.

Note though: the game is far from finished. The judges wanted a good concept for an interesting indie game. The hook we came up with was a game in which you had to keep a young girl alive, in an increasingly harsher environment, pushing you to make encreasingly more difficult decisions. If either you or the girl dies, it's game over. If it were just yourself you had to keep alive, we felt, you might not be so keen as to push aside your in-game morality. But now you have a reason to justify a 'bad' choice. Will you steal that loaf of bread to feed your starving family? That kind of thing.
We settled on setting it in WWII, because it's a significant period in time, for most of the world, but also for Belgium. In WWII you had brace resistance fighters, going up against the third reich. But there was even more collaboration going on. (My own family history is not excempt of this.) The game should be difficult to finish in any case, but it will be made to be extra hard to finish, choosing for the light side. In order to be a playfull lesson in understanding that people, all people, including us if we were to be put in that position, are like to make "dark decisions", in order to survive and in order to save those that they care for.

In short: Any feedback is appreciated. Any gameplay is appreciated. Share it if you can and can be bothered too.
Thanks in advance.

Looks great! I particularly like the mix of high-res images with low-res character graphics. Is that a permanent design decision, or just him not getting around to landscape generation yet?

(I hope it's intended, because it looks cool!)

I also got to a point where in the transition between areas, after a roadside encounter I was walking instead of riding a wagon to town.

Several times I also could not leave town due to some click sequence causing the girl to die before I could make it back.
