The code that is DNA
RE: The code that is DNA
If you didn;t know the genetic composition of "tomatoes" or "green beans" - having never come into contact with them before, and there being no information on their genetic makeup available to you beyond these three samples...do you think it would be possible to determine that two were alike, and one was different? We'll call these newly discovered groups of organisms "dirt apples" and "leaf penis", for convenience.

Quote:We have a taxonomy not a phylogeny. Assuming I knew the genetic composition of tomatoes and green beans, yes, it's plausible to distinguish between the two.
Nope

If you're giving me their full genome, not a partial segment, then sure, the two that are alike would be alike and the one that was different would be different.
RE: The code that is DNA
Excellent. So we have two groups of organisms, in one, we have two cultivars with the genes we associate with "dirt apples", and the other...one, "leaf penis". Do you think it would be possible to determine that all three samples belong to a group which we'll call "turgid water ballons" - again for convenience - having never seen anything like the three beyond these samples?

I suppose you can draw a circle around anything and call it a group, sure.
RE: The code that is DNA
Excellent. We can arrange organisms into groups based on observable characteristics, even if the only observable characteristics are those contained in genetic samples.

Where do organisms get their genetic material from? Can we devise a test that might be able to determine the answer to that question?

In your scenario one organism is different from the others. What observable characteristics are you using to group them together?

At work.

"Leaf penises" (sp?) and "Turgid dirt balloons" are so going to be used as descriptors in my next sci-fi game. Big Grin

The genetic samples in your possession - but we've already moved past this point in agreement.  Is there any particular reason that we need to backtrack, or that you feel compelled to revise your answers to previous questions?

If not, let's proceed.  Where do organisms get their genetic material from?  Can we devise a test to determine the answer to that question?  Let's use you, as an example.  Where did you get your genetic material from?
