Did someone mistake a kookaburra for a chimp or a chimp for a kookaburra?  And if so, how high was the person?  That's a big species leap there.

It is an admiration of the diversity of their local wildlife.

Kookaburras, sound like screaming chimps to me. Australians consider the kookaburras as "laughing" not screaming. It sounds more like screaming to me. 

But it is also a nod to old Hollywood and the movie starring Clint Eastwood, "Any Which Way But Loose."

And you are right, I kick myself after the fact when I submit a misspelled word.

But with me, I find it more important to get the idea out even if imperfect. Unfortunately with most media, the ability to go back and correct something is time limited.

In all seriousness, I do appreciate this. But the truth with all art is that you get what you get out of it or you don't get anything out of it.

I'll take it. 

My intent with that stanza was to appeal to a demographic that would be into that movie. You are talking to a man who took a redneck to a local 5 star sushi restaurant only to have him play drums with chopsticks on a soy sauce tray wearing a big black cowboy hat using his belt buckle as his ID.

It was just amazing to me, to sit in that back yard and watch the tide go in an out slowly. I was mesmerized by the diversity of life, the trees, the birds, the tide going in and out.

The mangrove roots looked like lightening strikes. The driftwood I described had a notch on the top of it that reminded me of a submarine top. It is amazing to me what you can observe and appreciate when you slow down, and skip the rat race.

As an aside to all reading this. There is a backstory to my use of the word "veranda" in this poem.

Long before I met Bob, the inspiration of this poem. Back when I was a kid, growing up, my late mother tried to drill into me upper middle class argyle sweaters and prim and proper Martha Stewart etiquette as a kid. Mind you in her late years she ditched that bullshit. But growing up being awkward and not fitting that mold, it was not fun.

I once had  my mom, come in the front door, slam it, and start yelling at me. "Get your feet of the automan!" ....... I was baffled at her sudden blow up. But she kept repeating "Get your feet off the automan". Finally I realized she meant "FOOT STOOL".  And all I could think at the time was, "Sorry mom, my name is not Biff, I don't go to Harvard, and I don't date Muffy".

To my late mother's credit, the older she got, the less stuffy on image she became.

So fast forward to my late Australian friend Bob. I was always envious of his accent. He reminded me of both James Bond and Crocodile Dundee.

So one day when we were on video chat, I asked him for a video tour of his house. And he said , "I am out on the veranda".

I had never heard that word before. Just like when my mom called a foot stool a "automan".

I couldn't figure out what the fuck he was talking about. I did of course eventually figure it out. But ever since the word "veranda" when I finally figured out what it meant, "  A FUCKING DECK" , Teased  Bob of being Higgins from Magnum PI.

Humans take walks NOT CONSTITUTIONALS. And as much as I hate my best friends for using those terms,  I FUCKING GET IT.

‘Ottoman’, not ‘automan’.

And there is a difference between a deck and a verandah. 

Awesome story, though. Had me riveted.
