WW2 facts.

WW2 facts.
Outside Pearl Harbor, America had not only been attacked, but briefly invaded on our own soil.

The Aleutian Islands as part of the Alaskan territory,  were briefly occupied by the Japanese.

And also true, while everyone knows Germany attacked Britain, they too briefly occupied outer islands under British rule.

Don't get into semantics here. Territories are still considered part of the overall country. Alaska didn't become a state until 1959. But it was still considered American land in WW2. Hawaii also was not a state when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, but both were at the time, considered American soil.

Just like Puerto Rico today should be a state, but isn't. It pays all the taxes the rest of America does, but doesn't have the same level of say a state does vs a territory.

Even Darwin Australia was once bombed by the Japanese in WW2.

Yes, yes we do. Every time I hear the word "Guam" I think of bubble gum. Don't ask me why.

Other facts that may be of interest:

Even though NZ was never directly attacked, they contributed more combat troops (as a percentage of population) that the US and Britain proper combined.

NZ had a higher combat death rate per million population than the US, Britain or Australia.

NZ was in a formal, declared state of war against the Axis longer than any Commonwealth nation except for Britain and Australia, and for over a year longer than the US.

73 NZ pilots serving with the RAF qualified as aces in the ETO.

WHAT? I really hate spoilers.

In all seriousness, back in college I mentioned to an advisor that my girlfriend and I had gone to see the Leonardo "Titanic".

And in all seriousness she responded, "DONT TELL ME, I haven't seen it yet".

I responded, "The boat sank"

I kid you not, she responded, "WHY DID YOU TELL ME THAT?"

What the fuck did I spoil?

As much as we tick each other off, I couldn't agree with you more. The good guys won!

Fuck me!

I long understood that The US, out of all the allies really did do the least of the heavy lifting. I am not disparaging the likes of the D Day soldiers, but the truth is, that even Russia did most of the work in Europe. We did fight oppression and fascism, for sure. But for America to claim we were the leaders in WW2 was/is a stretch. We rightfully reacted, especially after Pearl Harbor, but the truth is, we still had a shitload of ally help.

Not surprised.

That’s not a stretch at all. It’s a virtual certainty that without US troops and materiel, the Axis would have won the war. Make no mistake - Franklin Roosevelt was instrumental in saving the world.
