I am not talking about the dark web by the way. Also What events took place for this to happen or caused it to happen?

No idea, but we should definitely thank them. Without indexing, you literally couldn’t find anything on the interwebz.

I think it was Lycos that started the internet search business in a big way, but there might have been precursors. (Gopher, for example.)

Many, many, moons ago, I used webcrawler. Shit for service, but in those days the intertubes were pretty skinny. I wouldn't even look for an internet provider until we could afford DSL (we weren't munificent in those days).

OK, so you don't know how the internet works. Yet somehow feel qualified to expound on how the internet works.

Explain that.

Because it is something I use and program for a living.

Looking at the history of search indices, it looks like it's a complicated question with a couple search indices likely created by multiple teams. But with this little snapshot, I figure I may as well give Tim Berners-Lee credit. And, for the record, the Internet was small enough that it could all be catalogued by hand.

Thanks for all who answered but I have other questions related to this. Why isn't the deep web or most of the web indexed by search engines? what's the point of using TOR or something like TOR If the entire internet is indexed?

The "guests" you see in the "Who's online" section of the front page shows spider bots indexing the areas they can reach. These bots are sent by the various search engines. Forums block sections of the forum from these non-member guests for various reason, the most common being the nuts-and-bolts sections where the software lives and administrative functions are done, and the PM transmission/reception areas.
