It's explained that Turing opted for hormone theory and probation Vs prison. Says so right in the link provided.

And for whatever reason, the makers of The Imitation Game really dropped the ball when they covered Turing's "treatment.":




They portray some tremors, but, somehow, Morten Tyldum dropped the ball. It would have been such a perfect visual rendering of how fucked the homophobic systems of Britain was at the time: seeking to cure him of these "unnatural" feelings, they made him into something very unnatural.
