No, you said to turn off the main breaker, you said nothing about turning off the breaker that controls the appliance (which is what SB said - he didn’t say that you could single out an appliance).

Turning off a main breaker to work on a single appliance is just stupid and pointless.

If turn off a breaker and check the appliance you are working on, you can be certain that power is off, simple as that.  If another appliance happens to be on that same breaker, then it will be off as well; nothing you can do about that.  Most of your post was about shutting off the main breaker, which could be warranted if you are adding or removing something in a panel.  But if you are just working on one isolated appliance, you only need to shut off power to that device, not the entire panel.  If you turn off the main breaker, you'll be in the dark, which could actually be less safe.

And to be absolutely sure the power is off to that appliance, use a circuit tester or a multimeter. If you haven’t got either of those, you can test the circuit with two forks.

One morning as a kid, going down to breakfast in my pj's, I put my hand on the fridge handle and the other on top of the stove, only to discover that there was a shocking ground leak in one of the two. Upon telling my dad about this, his only comment was, "Is that a fact," and he went about his business and never did anything about it. In hindsight I suppose that's reasonable, but I was rather alarmed at the time.

Every single time I see this thread title at a glance I think it says “my water has just burst open, (help!)” and my first thought is “holy shit this person needs to get to the fucking hospital!” 😂
