Hi from Kansas City
This looks like an interesting and active forum, and I have enjoyed reading through the various posts. I am only recently comfortable, actually I think happy best describes the feeling, that I am in fact an atheist.

I did not grow up in a religion so I don't have any of that baggage, but I have been a member of AA for 23 years, sober and reasonably happy. I am not yet 50, so about half my life has been spent living and working the 12 steps. I see no conflict with being an atheist in AA at all, but it is still difficult for me to express my lack of belief in supernatural Gods to my friends in AA. This has more to do with my own insecurities than anything else. I hope to break out of this in the near future and to be as comfortable expressing my atheism as others seem to be in expressing their theism.

Reading through the posts here, I can see that my intellect and knowledge of science is not on par with so many of you, though I definitely share with you that science offers far better explanations of the universe than do the various religions.

I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Hi JD from the 'Land Down Under' Welcome to our "little bit of sanity on the Net"

Don't stress about the lack of scientific knowledge....talking to those on here you will soon pick it up and maybe find a new passion to overcome your insecurities.

Keep reading (especially the rules) and enjoy your stay here Angel Cloud

Welcome.

I'm sure you still have a better understanding of science than a certain theist who dwells in the depths of the forum.

Hey JD

Religion says NOTHING about the universe. That's science's job. Twats that tell you otherwise are those who lead Prof Dawkins on a lucrative mission into a subject he's ignorant of.

hmm maybe they were on to something $$$ Thinking

Welcome. A sure cure for any ailment in Kansas City is a trip to Jack Stack's BBQ restaurant. Please tell me you have been.

My uncle lives in Olathe so I know your neck of the woods a little bit.

They weren't aware of a thing called a universe when they made up gods word and wrote the bible.

Surely, if god wasn't made up, he'd have had something to say about the universe? He had plenty to say about gays and stuff.

That there is little or nothing in religion that can be interpreted as meaning the universe is just another nail in it's coffin and another reason to think it's all crap.

You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.
