What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
RE: What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
Dolly Parton turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Twice. Once because her husband was ill and she wouldn't leave and a second time because she wouldn't travel during the worst of the pandemic. She's suggested she may turn it down a third time:

Quote:She said she had already heard from the Biden administration: "Now I feel like if I take it, it'll be doing politics, so I'm not so sure."

The singer added that she does not feel like she deserves the award. "But it's a nice compliment for people to think I might deserve it," she added.

Does this woman's awesomeness know no bounds??

Back in 2018, in Saudi Arabia, a dozen camels were disqualified from a camel beauty contest for getting Botox injections to make them more attractive. - Oh boy, it must get very lonely in the desert.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

In 1947, the FBI found the Frank Capra film ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ to be potentially subversive because it portrayed rich people (personified by Mr. Potter) as evil and corrupt, noting that doing so was a common Communist tactic.

The report made no mention of the fact that Potter stole $8000 ($113 000 in current value) from the Building and Loan and was not caught or punished for it.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Serial killer Ed Kemper befriended the very police officers investigating his murders and would socialize with them at a bar called the Jury Room. They called him "Big Ed" and never suspected him and thought he was joking when he confessed.

Did you also know that while in prison he has narrated a few hundred audio books?

Kemper is an interesting guy. Not someone I would want to be alone with, but interesting to my true crime addicted self.

Word "bear" is not the original word for the bear, and the original word may have been lost because our ancient ancestors were so worried saying the name of the animal would cause it to come after them. Instead, they used the term bruin, meaning the brown one, which then segued into bear.

On a related note, ‘Arctic’ comes from a Greek word which means ‘near the bears’, while ‘Antarctic’ means - obviously - just the opposite (‘away from the bears’).

This doesn’t refer to polar bears, but to the constellations Ursa Major and Minor, both prominent in the northern part of the celestial sphere. The fact that there are no bears in Antarctica is a happy accident.
