What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?

The SOS was an afterthought.

The standard distress call at the time the Titanic sank was CQD. SOS was a new call at that time and not widely known and little used. SOS is not sent as three separate characters but as one. 3 dots 3 dash 3 dots with no spacing. Consequently it can be misinterpreted as V7.

CQD was sent first- then the distress message - then an SOS and the distress message repeated.

SOS was adopted as a standard after Titanic sunk.

I used the wrong term.  Still was interesting to me because my great aunt was the first woman who worked in that station...I know it well.

No - you did get it right... They did send an SOS.....

I never got to work an SOS. (did get to work several Maydays). But - I did copy.two SOS... Both were late at night - one in the Indian Ocean and one in the South Pacific - while I was stationed at NMC. Both on 500 khz.

Nobody uses it anymore... A lost art.

Jimi Hendrix and Joe Pesci both played guitar in the same band (Joey Dee and the Starliters), but at different times.

Presumably, Joe joined after he had Jimi whacked?

Oprah didn’t actually give away the cars—Pontiac did, which means Oprah basically did an infomercial for Pontiac. Also, while it was noted in nearly every news story that “Pontiac will pay for the taxes and customizing of the cars,” the reality is that Pontiac was picking up the sales tax, not the state and federal income tax. The lucky winners were responsible for paying thousands of dollars in taxes—up to $7,000 in some cases.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Turns out there’s actually a reason beyond the practical or the theological that Anna Duggar hasn’t divorced Josh. The entire fucking family seems to think he’s innocent:

Somehow, I must have overlooked that possibility, assuming that with all the evidence they found, plus Josh’s self-incrimination, plus the fact that he molested five small girls as an early teen, there would be no way anyone’d think he was innocent. But then I remembered “oh, yeah, the far right has gone all in on conspiracy theories and this is the same family that thinks the entire world population could fit in Jacksonville, Florida.”

While I’ve known for years that 12 year old Mike Altman - son of director Robert Altman - wrote the lyrics to ‘Suicide is Painless’ (the ‘M*A*S*H’ theme), what I just learned is that he’s still paid royalties on the song every time the show is re-run. To date, he’s made about $2 million (US) in royalty payments.

His father was paid $75 000 to direct the film.
