When rapper 2 Chainz decided to sample Tom Lehrer’s “The Old Dope Peddler” for his song “Dope Peddler”, he got this response:
“As sole copyright owner of 'The Old Dope Peddler', I grant you motherfuckers permission to do this. Please give my regards to Mr. Chainz, or may I call him 2?" He no longer has to make such letters, because, as of November 2022, he’s released his entire back catalogue into the public domain. He’s in his 90s, and evidently has neither kids nor a wife, so I guess his decision makes sense.

Especially in the military. Or did the other soldiers where you were stationed actually respect bans on alcohol?
Also, for some reason, Tom put a time limit on how long his website is supposed to last (namely, New Year’s Eve of this year). Fortunately, due to the nature of the Public Domain, there are mirrors, and this is one of them.
