Who Owns āTelepathyā?
Elon Muskās neural implant startup Neuralink has been trying to trademark two product names: Telepathy and Telekinesis. Musk has previously claimed that his company will be able to give people āsuperpowers,ā so the desire to take ownership over these special abilities makes sense. Unfortunately for Neuralink, patent applications for Telepathy and Telekinesis have already been filed by a different business.
a lucid dreaming startup (who knew there was such a thing?) called Prophetic previously filed trademark applications for Telepathy in 2023 and Telekinesis last summer. Propheticās website, which says the company is āpioneering a radical transformation of the human experience,ā is owned by a computer scientist named Wesley Berry. Berryās company seeks to create a ānon-invasive neuromodulationā wearable to āhelp people achieve lucid dreaming,ā the site says, although thereās limited information online about how that would work.

Life on Mars? 'Leopard-spot' rocks could be biggest clue yet
The mudstones, found in a dusty riverbed by Nasa's Perseverance Rover, are dotted with intriguing markings nicknamed leopard spots and poppy seeds.
Scientists believe these features contain minerals produced by chemical reactions that could be associated with ancient Martian microbes.
"We think what we've found is evidence for a set of chemical reactions that took place in the mud that was deposited at the bottom of a lake - and those chemical reactions seem to have taken place between the mud itself and organic matter - and those two ingredients reacted to form new minerals," explained Dr Hurowitz.
In similar conditions on Earth, chemical reactions creating minerals are typically driven by microbes.
"That is one of the possible explanations for how these features came to be in these rocks," said Dr Hurowitz. "This feels like the most compelling potential biosignature detection that we've had to date."
The scientists have also examined how the minerals could have formed without microbes - and concluded that natural geological processes could also be behind the chemical reactions.
However they would require high temperatures, and the rocks don't look like they've been heated.
"We found some difficulties for the non-biological pathways - but we can't rule them out completely," Dr Hurowitz said.

Whole life?!
Quote:24-year-old US woman has spent her whole life preparing to be the first person on Mars
A 24-year-old woman is currently preparing to become the first person on Mars.
Alyssa Carson has long been touted as a candidate for Mars exploration.
The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native says it has been her dream since she was three.
At the moment, there is a potential mission to Mars happening in 2033.
And Carson is determined to punch her ticket on the trip when it happens.
Carson, known by her NASA callsign āNASA Blueberry,ā is currently studying for a PhD in Astrobiology.
Carson recently made an appearance on the Flight Club Podcast.
During her appearance, Carson made her case for why being the first person on Mars is so important.
āI think that weāve always been interested in Mars, in fact next to Earth Mars is our most studied planet⦠I think with the natural progressionā¦within the space industry, Mars is kind of like our next destination.ā
āAlso the potential of life, especially in my area of interest within astrobiology, but the potential for life on Mars has been a huge question that weāve had for so long.ā
āBut nothing can compete with the amount of information weāre able to gain once we send people to Mars.ā
Getting someone across the gulf of space to Mars is an amazing idea, no doubt.
Getting people to and from Mars, however, is a completely different challenge entirely.

I don't see how a three-year-old could comprehend the existence of Mars, let alone have an aspiration to go there.

Scientists Are Closer to Reviving the Long-Lost Dodo with New Landmark Avian Genetics Breakthrough
Scientists are one step closer to seeing the return of the long-extinct dodo, with the latest breakthrough by Texas-based Colossal Biosciences.
The company revealed on Wednesday that it has successfully cultured pigeon primordial germ cells (PGCs) for the first time, marking a significant milestone that it says will help to enable its plans for engineering dodo genetics.
Along with the announcement of its avian genetics advancements, Colossal said in a press release that it had also secured $320 million in new funding, which it says will accelerate its ambitious de-extinction and conservation projects.
Earlier this year, Colossal made headlines with the announcement that it had successfully engineered the births of a trio of wolf pups that closely resemble the extinct dire wolf, a Pleistocene-era species popularized in recent years by its appearances in the popular series Game of Thrones.
At the heart of Colossalās dodo project is the Nicobar pigeon, which is the closest living relative to the extinct bird. Using gene-edited chickens possessing no germ cells of their own, the Colossal scientists plan to insert Nicobar pigeon PGCs that will act as surrogates, which they say will potentially allow chickens to lay eggs that will hatch into pigeons.
This, combined with high-quality genome data from other species closely related to the dodo, such as the Rodrigues solitaire and the critically endangered tooth-billed pigeon, brings the de-extinction of this species closer to reality than ever before.

Scientists Say We Should Blow Up This Dangerous Asteroid Before It Gets Here
A group of scientists, including ones from NASA, is exploring options for a different near-Earth space rock, dubbed 2024 YR4, which the agencyās Center for Near Earth Objects believes has a mere 0.00081 percent chance of hitting us ā but a much larger four percent chance of hitting the Moon ā in December 2032.
But even if it only strikes the Moon, the results could still be dangerous for astronauts in space, who could be battered by debris resulting from the collision.
They propose detonating the space rock using ānuclear explosive devices,ā a violent option that could allow us to explore yet another way of deflecting potentially dangerous near-Earth space rocks ā āeven if lunar impact is ruled out,ā the researchers say.
The researchers found that there isnāt enough time to launch a āreconnaissance missionā first to get a better idea of its mass ā required data for a successful deflection attempt. Thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope observations, we know it measures nearly 300 feet in length, but its mass remains a notable unknown.
The team calculated that 2024 YR4ās mass could range anywhere from 72.7 million to a whopping 2 billion pounds, which would make designing a DART-like mission practically impossible.
The best option for a recon mission is a ālate 2028ā launch, they found, which would only leave roughly three years to intercept the asteroid.
On the other hand, for a ākinetic robust disruptionā ā essentially blowing it up into pieces ā the team concluded that NASA could have anywhere from five to seven years to develop a mission. For a ānuclear disruption,ā the next available launch window ranges from late 2029 to late 2031.
The team proposed sending two 100-kiloton nuclear devices capable of navigating space by themselves to the asteroid, each of which is roughly five to eight times as powerful as the nuclear bombs the United States dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945. A backup explosive would be kept āonboard in case it is needed,ā the researchers wrote.

Something massive just exploding in space āā three times over 24 hours āscientists are stunnedāthis just isn't supposed to happen.
Quote:Dr Martin-Carrillo said: āThis event is unlike any other seen in 50-years of gamma-ray bursts observations. GRBs are catastrophic events so they are expected to go off just once because the source that produced them does not survive the dramatic explosion. This event baffled us not only because it showed repeated powerful activity but also because it seemed to be periodic, which has never seen before.
āIf a massive star ā about 40 times the mass of the Sun ā had died, like in typical GRBs, then it had to be a special type of death where some material kept powering the central engine. Alternatively, the periodicity of the flashes of gamma-ray radiation could be caused by a star being ripped apart by a black hole, a phenomenon known as a tidally disruption event (TDE). However, unlike more typical TDEs, to explain the properties of this explosion would require an unusual star being destroyed by an even more unusual black hole, likely the long-sought āintermediate mass black holeā. Either option would be a first, making this event extremely unique.ā
In addition, GRBs have been known to last only milliseconds to minutes but this one ā referred to as GRB 250702B ā lasted about a day, which is ā100 to 1000 times longer than most GRBs,ā according to fellow co-lead author Prof Andrew Levan, astronomer at Radboud University in The Netherlands.
Using the VLTās HAWK-I camera, they found evidence that the source may actually reside in another galaxy. This was later confirmed by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. āWhat we found was considerably more exciting ā the fact that this object is extragalactic means that it is considerably more powerful,ā said Dr Martin-Carrillo. The size and brightness of the host galaxy suggest it may be located a few billion light-years away, but more data are needed to refine this distance.
