L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire
Did anyone else wast- er, I mean spend money on this game?

I completed it a while back, and gave it another whirl today.

I can't quite make up my mind whether this is a brilliant piece of interactive story telling, with amazing detective gameplay; or whether it is in fact the most boring, pointlessly impossible waste of time I've ever spent my money on.

I mean, it's practically impossible to achieve 5 star case ratings (for every case) without either doing them a hundred times (which would take forever) or going on the internet and following a walkthrough. The latter just takes any sense of fun out of the game completely, but you're really left with no choice if you want to actually redo the cases perfectly.

Besides this, sometimes I sit there playing it thinking, what the fuck am I seriously wasting my time on here. It feels a lot more like an interactive film than a game. A lot of the mini-games are just there to fill time and I have a hard time finding purpose to anything you do in this game. Aside from all that, when I completed it the first time the story was one of the strangest and straight up WTF stories I've ever played through.

There's only one character in the entire game I actually gave a shit about (Rusty) and even then he played a relatively small role as your sidekick for about a 5th of the game.

The missions and gameplay are extremely repetitive, and often get boring.

The only saving grace which makes me come back to the game are basically the graphics, and some of the cases are actually mildly interesting.

Oh, and ANOTHER thing. They went out of their way to make this super realistic 1950's version of LA and filled it with fuck all but a few cars.

So anyone else played this, "game"? Not sure whether I'm being too critical, I mean at certain points I do really enjoy it, but more often than not I'm just sitting there thinking what the fuck am I even playing it for?

I bought it, but only spent five to ten minutes playing it.

Did you have preconceptions that it would be somewhat similar to GTA?

More like Mafia 2, but with an RPG feel.

I bought it the day it came out. It was a good game, but it just could have been better... like using your gun any time you wanted to. Tongue

I traded it in after 2 play throughs.

Yeah, y'see, I think this is why I'm disappointed with it.

It's like, I knew it wasn't going to be this traditional open world game like the one you mentioned, but yet, it was almost too dissimilar than it needed to be.

Definitely. There's literally like two buttons you even use when you're free-roaming. The one to make you sprint/car go, and the 'action' button which does everything else.

They could of included so much more to make you feel more in the role of a detective/crime fighter.

Like for instance the side missions were pretty repetitive and boring.

Just giving you something else to do other than drive to point A to point B would have been nice. Maybe more interactions with other charecters. Maybe more rpg elements where you get to choose your loadout, go shopping for new suits, buy houses or something. They made this amazing city but really gave you practically nothing to do in it.

I bought it played it for a fair few hours realized I'd rather be doing something else and never played it again. One or two cases would catch your attention but I cant stand not getting the 5 stars so I'd end up hearing the same shit over and over to get it 5 star.

I er... kind of enjoyed it. I loved the interrogations and investigating the crime scenes. I tend to hyper focus on details so it fitted me like a glove. Not for everyone I guess.
The ending pissed me off abit.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy these things, but it just seemed like there should have been so much more to it than this.

The story to me was pretty lackluster. Every time you get your hopes up and things start to get even the slightest bit exciting, you're dropped back into the same monotonous shit.

True. Then again running across scaffolding as it collapses around you for 5 minutes straight was a pretty awesome moment.
I definitely don't think they should of killed the main character. I mean I thought the whole purpose of the slow storyline was to make it almost episodic like a detective series and get to know your character to promote a sense of familiarity for the sequel but nope.
