Yes! Like my friend who got hurt in a HIT-AND-RUN accident that left him brain damaged. The driver's insurance just ponied right up for that staggering medical bill. Not.
Good thing he had health insurance, or he'd NEVER be out of debt.

I'm lucky enough to have private insurance through my employer. Unfortunately some of my family isn't so lucky. My parents (aging but not eligible for Medicare) found a "bronze plan" that is going to cost them over $800/month. They couldn't find anything cheaper. As much as I like the idea of nationalized healthcare (and trust me, working in the medical field and seeing firsthand the ridiculous misuse of the system, I do), it does seem that at least for some Obamacare isn't affordable. Just my two cents.

What state do they live in? If one that declined the funds for Medicaid, intended to help offset the cost of launching the program, then yes -- their premiums are higher than in states that accepted the money.
Also, is that the cost before subsidies? Are they eligible for subsidies? If yes, then it will make a big difference, I think. If no, then they're doing ok and can afford it.

It is the cost before subsidies but I doubt they'll qualify for much in subsidies. (I have yet to research it for them since they just told me about their quote yesterday.) They both work full time jobs and combined make about $55k. I know they're "doing ok" as you put it, but really, should anyone be spending nearly 20% of their income on insurance?
It's sickening that there are people who can sit on their butts claiming disability when they could be working (I also, unfortunately, have family members who do this) are paying nothing for healthcare and two hardworking people who were born in a time when you didn't need a college degree and thus make a modest lower middle class income are paying out the nose for healthcare.

I personally think it's hilarious when Repubs opine that Obama is some hyper-left marxist. Progressives are constantly frustrated with Obama precisely because he's too much of a centrist and willing to capitulate to moneyed interests.
If you actually believe that Obama is a socialist, a real socialist, that means that you're so astounding far off the fringe that you put Wile E. Coyote to shame.

No, no one should be spending that much on health insurance. That's why Obamacare requires health insurance companies to hold their profits and administrative costs to 20%. And that restriction becomes more restrictive in future years. That is going to help bring costs down enormously. As for the subsidies, you might be surprised... it will be based on their adjusted gross income, not their gross income. They can net up to $45,000 and still qualify for subsidies -- and I can't recall if that is per each, or total household... so check on that.
