My Change

My Change
When I was younger I went to church every Sunday and got told "the way that it is." Around my sixth grade my family stopped attending church. I still advocated religion until about my freshman year in high school. I took a step back and actually analyzed the way that people are and the teachings of bible, I realized that neither went hand in hand. People such as my friend are ignorant to other religions, he denounced Buddhism in Calculus one day. I mocked him because Buddhism is not a religion. One day my mother coerced me to go to church one day and low and behold the preacher was denouncing Buddhism 9once again not even a religion although he referred to it as being one). People in their ignorance say one thing and do another, in other words they preach without practice. That is the one thing I cannot stand and try my hardest to avoid doing it, that and lying; because lying doesn't help any and always screws over a non-related third party. People take the Bible and what it says way to seriously but it is nothing more than an allegory. And whomever wrote it is quite an intelligent person(s). It is the idea that it works to show that man is wicked, deceitful, a liar, two-faced, and overall evil. But it also shows that man is compassionate, kind, loving, and for the most part honest. Sure we have our flaws but we're human. As for people that take the teaching of the Bible seriously I believe they follow it's word out of fear. Fear of not knowing (of all things). It's okay to have faith but put it in yourself and not in some book. The only things Christians have on us is that the events occurred in the past. None of were so we cannot say what is and what is not say. Was there a man called Jesus who spread the word of God? Probably. Did he walk on water, make the blind see, and cure lepers? Probably Not. As for a higher creator I cannot say it is impossible. To say that man occurred from a random series of events that just so happened to create a species that would eventually evolve into man is putting a little too much faith in science. But to be ignorant about it, that's just unnecessary. Seriously religious zealots need to be and leave be alone (live and let live).
The more questions we ask, the less answers we'll have.

Perhaps you have never heard this quotation from H. L. Mencken?

Quote:Of learned men, the clergy show the lowest development of professional ethics. Any pastor is free to cadge customers from the divines of rival sects, and to denounce the divines themselves as theological quacks.

"Buddhism is a religion" - Wikipedia

Even Buddhists say theirs is a religion. I just hate people saying things publicly that are incorrect. you'd think they'd check out the facts first TongueWink

Religious zealots need to leave science alone. Scientific zealots need to leave religion alone.

Good luck with understanding stuff Wink

Unfortunately fr0d0 Buddhism is PERCEIVED by the GENERAL public as not being a religion. And as far as I know this was so....until recently. (As I have said in another post) religions acquire TAX BENEFITS from BEING a RELIGION and Buddhism has cottoned on to this fact. I think that it has been within the last 20 years that this has been building. So for a youngun like yourself fr0d0 you would NOT know any different. Although your facts ARE correct fr0d0.

Who knows?? Within the next 20years Atheism will become a religion??

I guess that is why we are all here fr0d0.

Buddhism is a religion by any standard definition in a dictionary. Religions don't have to believe in Gods to be religions.

Wikipedia Wrote:A religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a supernatural agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

Science requires no faith..... And its just by chance we evolved as we did, its just so happens, it happend as it did. If climates and situations were slightly differnt we may be highly intellegent lizzards or bird like creatures stating the same damn thing. Just becouse one cannot comprehend things differnt or that billions of random events that get locked in with natural selection dont mean it didnt happen that way... (natural selection is basicaly random shit happening and the stuff that is advantagous to life gets passed on and flourishes, bad stuff... well they usualy dont live long enough to pass on the geene)
Did I make a good point? thumbs up Smile I cant help it I'm a Kudos whore. P.S. Jesus is a MYTH.

True. However most people think of religion as the believe in some sort of spirit.
Also, you may well be an atheist buddhist (and antitheist buddhist as well) while being an atheist will not be accordable with any theistic religion, of course.

In my case, when I say "I'm an atheist" I mean that I am a non-believer (in any sort of religious ideas). And this is also how most people take this statement.

Erm... you mean theists and atheists should not harass each other? Cool. Can you tell them to put silencers on their bells? Bloody annoying things on a Sunday morning. I live within hearing distance of several churches including our city's main cathedral.

Seriously, if the religious don't try and tell me how to live and think I would be happy to stop laughing at them... to their face at least. I reserve the right to giggle mightily behind their backs.

Well, that's agnosticism. I'm a died-in-the-wool atheist though. I really don't see the need for a creator. There could be some force that was responsible for the creation of our universe, but it doesn't have to be sentient or supernatural.
A finite number of monkeys with a finite number of typewriters and a finite amount of time could eventually reproduce 4chan.
