Is this " progress "?
May 18, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Last weekend, the Miss USA beauty pageant was won by Rima Fakih, the first Muslim to be so crowned.
Is this " progress " I ask?

Is this " progress " I ask? I consider it as such.
In Germany, a few weeks ago, the first muslim minister (a woman) was saying her official oath (on Allah).
I think the mixing of religions will help people in seeing that so much is wrong about their believes.

The Miss U.S.A. pageant is a sham. If a woman wants to be 'objectified', I think she should have the right to make that choice, but the pageant itself is all about sponsorships, money, and political correctness.

You make two out of three of those sound bad, and what is wrong with a little political correctness? I'm sure you haven't forgotten Carrie Prejean and her wonderful views on homosexuals.

Haha! No, I certainly have not. I also remember all the negative attention that got her and how it led to her being stripped of the crown (they said 'breaches of contract', but we all know better). There is nothing wrong with sponsorships and money (political correctness is retarded, though). My complaint is that the pageant itself serves no other purpose than to objectify women* for profit and to further agendas. Can you provide a single positive thing that comes of it?
*Objectifying women (or anyone else) that are willing to be objectified is acceptable to me, but that seems to be the main goal of the Miss U.S.A. pageant.

Is she pretty? Was she the most beautiful girl of the pageant? What difference does her religion make?
Best regards,

Like probably every question ever posed, you can look at it from different angles.
On a superficial level, anybody broadly liberal/left might think it is progress that a Muslim can triumph over the predominantly christian ( I'm guessing this ) contestants in this contest.
I'm also guessing the right wing in America will be outraged.
I'm also guessing that many devout Muslims will also be outraged.
What puzzles me is that " beauty contests " appear now to be acceptable! A notion I reject.
Does modern feminism tolerate/endorse them?
