15% is standard. I tip 20% standard, and 25% or more for excellent service. I do like the idea of restaurants starting to pay their employees better and forbid tipping. It's a small movement, but I think it's gaining some ground.

10% is a crappy tip IMO. I try to never tip below $10 unless it's terrible service, even then never below 15%.

Call me a dick but I never tip. Where I live in nova Scotia waitress's are paid the same as kitchen staff. I know when I washed dishes the kitchen got screwed because we did twice the work but they got to walk out with 60-70 a night in tips when we got shit all

I was a "miscellaneous" at a Mexican bar and grill like 10 years ago. Whenever I played waitress my hourly wages were a whopping $2.10 an hour. Undecided

That's because many states mandate a lower min wage for waitresses. In Canada minimum is min wage. Its still seen as rude here, but I really don't care. The kitchen staff in any resturaunt grinds their balls off and my job was especially unpleasant. Every dishwasher knows that if you can feel the cuts in your hands you havent been doing for more then a week.
As an example, there was this blonde preppy and (by most men's standards) attractive. She like many waitresses (not all) got the job because the boss thought she was a 19 year old piece of ass. One night I was doing my job putting away dishes when I looked down and saw I was bleeding all over the plates. Didn't feel a thing, so when I stopped the bleeding I out the pkates back in the sink and went out to check the saucers I just put away out at the waitresses stand. She starting screaming at me in the middle of the store.
Okay tangent that has not much to do with the topic at hand, but every place that will hire people because the boss likes their ass will get a share of people like her.
I also want to apologize if that sounded sexist, but that is how some resturaunts are.

As an aside the minimum wage in nova Scotia is 10.40
