What IS good, and how do we determine it?

Becca-

I apologize for calling you a liar. It was wrong of me to do so, and I'm sorry.

I've been reflecting on this for the past day or so, and I've come to the conclusion that you really did not mean to state an untruth about God condoning rape. You have said that He does, but I think in all fairness to you, you may never have seen the additional passages from Deuteronomy that show God requiring Hebrew men to take these women into their homes as wives with all of the rights, privileges and so forth that any married woman would expect. Without that information, your perspective, while incorrect, is certainly understandable. Consequently, I think you were posting your views honestly and in good faith. You were not lying.

Again, I apologize for claiming that you were, and I ask for your forgiveness.

Randy

Thanks but no thanks.

First of all, I was raised a Christian, and I've read the Bible many times; I was fully aware of those additional passages.

Second, those additional passages do nothing to prove to me that your god doesn't condone rape; in fact, they just do more to prove to me he does.

I still wasn't lying, Randy.

You just do not get it. It is still rape. If I go kidnap that cutie down the street and get a Vegas wedding, treat her well, give her all the privileges of a modern wife and more, I am still a kidnapper and a rapist.

I am confused by Randy's answer.

Randy are you saying that a kidnapped woman should be expected to have sex with the man if the kidnapper says they are married?

Randy, do you believe there is such a thing as marital rape? You might have missed my question.

Can you answer this too, Randy?

Rape is wrong.

I know it. God knows it.

But did people know it 3,000 years ago? If so, why did it happen?

God intervened in the culture of the people that He chose to form a unique covenant relationship with, the Hebrews. He gave them strict laws which governed many aspects of their lives including how they would deal with sexual misconduct.

A raped woman was no longer a virgin. Her prospects for marriage were slim. God demanded that the man responsible for this crime would have to make restitution to her family or marry the woman and provide for her needs including providing her with children who would care for her in her old age. (If the man and woman were guilty of committing adultery consensually, they were stoned. God wasn't playing. He expected His people to toe the line.)

In doing so, God raised the bar. He changed the thinking of a primitive people.

Unfortunately, giving God kudos for anything is not easy for some people. They enjoy being able to tweak the noses of Christians by claiming that God is a moral monster for condoning rape. Thus, when their error is pointed out, they are NOT happy. Unfortunately for them, they've chose poorly; the charge that God condones rape is demonstrably wrong.

For the benefit of those who may be willing to consider the Christian perspective on this subject, I offer links to two excellent articles written by Jimmy Akin:

Does God Approve of Rape? (Dark Passages)

Does God Expect Women to Marry Their Rapists?

I believe the charge of "condoning" has been answered, and those controversialist who wish to continue making the accusation simply demonstrate themselves to be incapable of reasoning and lacking in goodwill. Further discussion with people of that sort is not a good use of time.

If not raping women was important to God, he probably should have added that to his commandments. Four of them are about worshipping him, after all; he could have made some room.

And to be clear, you believe a husband can rape his wife?

Pick up sticks on the Sabbath? Death penalty.

Rape a woman? Pay her dad and marry her.

What should I be giving God kudos for again?

The god of the bible made a rule not to boil a goat in its mother's milk but he couldn't take the time to say, "Women are worth more then their vaginas"

Randy, you are defending the rape of girls who probably witnessed the murder of their parents.

And I still want to know if you believe a man can rape his wife. Does the wife have a right to tell her husband, she isn't in the mood for sex?
