Hi everyone

Hi everyone
This was my introduction at the thinking atheist forum.  I recently joined there too and nothing has changed since then sooo...

I'm the son of a pastor and hence raised christian. I've been having difficulty during the past few years as I've started to admit to myself that what I've been taught makes no sense [Image: huh.gif] It's been a lonely path to walk alone and I recently 'came out' to my wife who said she knew already and was ok with it [Image: shocking.gif] It was a scary conversation to initiate, but it turned out well. I don't think we've been in a church since our wedding, so I don't know what I was worried about.

Now I'm looking for more like minded people to talk to which leads me here. I look forward to browsing the forums and talking to you all!

Welcome aboard.

Must be difficult being an atheist and a pastor's son.

Yeah, I think it made my deconversion longer and harder that it should have been.  I have a strong science background and I spent many years trying, unsuccessfully, to reconcile the logic I learned from the sciences with the nonsense I learned from religion.  I thought you could make it work with both, but I found that it gets harder and harder until you have to let go of one or the other.

Anyway, it's good to have a place to talk about such things.  Thanks for the welcome!

RE: Hi everyone
That's a great username! Man, I'm so jealous of people who come up with stuff that clever.

I feel you on the son of a pastor thing. My mom was a department head (and professor) at a private Southern Baptist/Christian university, just retiring from there this summer.

You'll find quite a few of us are in relationships with or married to Christian spouses, so there's a lot of support to be had. You are quite fortunate that your wife was so understanding. Mine's pretty awesome in that regard, as well; I think she enjoys making fun of anti-science fundamentalists at least as much as I do. (My church's BS teachings about science are what led to my eventual atheism.)
A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

I'm a pastor's great grandson.  His son, my father's father, was a bad boy who left his family in the lurch to take up with another woman.  His son, my father, was raised as a ward of the court when his mother died young.  He was an extreme, fundamentalist xtian who drove himself mad reading the bible late into the night.  I myself am neither bad boy nor holy roller.

Welcome first generation non-pastor.  I also like your username.
