From what I understand, the shroud is fascinating as a work of art given the technology of the time.

In the last 20 years I have seen many documentaries on the Shroud of Turin. Each of them promised to finally solve the "mystery" of the most controversial Christian relic of all times. I have to say that "Remaking the Shroud,” recently aired by NatGeo TV, is the best one I've ever watched so far. It doesn't want us to be convinced that this medieval relic is the real burial cloth of Jesus. It doesn't want to convey the message that this artifact is miraculous or mysterious. It simply tries to distinguish if the Shroud of Turin has to be considered an icon made to evoke and inspire the faithful or a hoax forged to fool the gullible and help medieval monasteries to make lots of money.

The gospel stories of how a crucified criminal was taken down for "proper burial" are a fine example of xtian special pleading.

I recently wrote an article about "Our Lady of Fatima" and it was interesting how much fluff every religious site put into their commentary on the events. They add so much "religious people are good" and "everyone else really wants to bow to god" shit that they make it more unbelievable. The "Miracle of the Sun," is said to have occurred when the children were done seeing their "visions" of the virgin Mary. The sun danced in the sky and convinced all present that Mary had really shown these kids visions. As if that wasn't unbelievable enough, they said that tens of thousands of people witnessed it and that the atheists who were present fell to their knees and began praying to god for forgiveness. Dipshits. First off, the visions supposedly happened over a matter of months in a small village in Portugal in 1913. So, they're basically saying that word spread like wildfire and tens of thousands of people thought this was so much more important than WWI that they just had to go. Also, who among the atheists here can imagine falling to your knees and praying?

Quite the special story that one, of course that doesn't tell the truth, there were some that didn't saw anything and became atheists because of it.

The point with the kids is that they predicted events of WWI knowing absolutely nothing about the countries they were speaking off, supposedly, like russians backlashing against religion and all that shazz

lol When I saw this topic I thought for a while you were talking about Turin Turambar son of Hurin.. Then I checked the topic and my entusiasm has completely gone! So you guys owe me a silmarillon topic!
Anyway. I really wonder, what was in the minds of those who create such forgery to prove their religion.. If you think that as a proof of jesus, we have muhammed's beard and ear-wax of moses.. 100% works!

I don't think it was a forgery.

I think it was a piece of artwork which was later mistaken to be a miracle by gullible fools.

"Forgery" requires knowing what was in the mind of the artist and I don't see how we'll ever get that.

I do have to admit that I nearly pissed myself when I first heard some of these morons blame Leonardo Da Vinci for the shroud forgery. It was exhibited in Lirey, France in 1389.....over 60 years before Leonardo was born.

But simple facts will never slow down a conspiracy buff....or a nutty fucking catholic.

Quite. The road was the via Appia.The commander, Marcus Crassus (from whom we get the word 'crass') had approximately 6000 survivors of the battle crucified for miles,right up to the gates of Rome.

Thus ended The Third Servile War. Spartacus died in the battle as far as I know. Crassus seems to have been a bit of a cunt,even by Roman standards. He was also one of the richest men in history.

Thanks, Shel. The whole thing sounds like bullshit. Almost as if the local chamber of commerce decided they needed a tourist attraction and filled these kids heads with all sorts of pious crap. Always follow the money!
