Binaural Beats
So I just read about these, have any of you ever tried them? For those who don't know : http://www.brainworksneurotherapy.com/wh...brainwaves

Basically you play these certain "beats" or sounds that have a frequency like this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAyA7rfyF38 (this is just the first one I saw)

What do you think? I had heard of them before but always laughed and thought they were placebo. Still now, it seems a bit ridiculous to think that just listening to a sound can increase your brain activity not only after listening, but the entire day. I don't know if anyone will know what i'm talking about, but it reminds me of something I looked up online a couple years ago(when I was first experimenting with drugs that get you high and other stupid shit) and came across these "beats" that you could buy online for like $5 that were mp3's and apparently listening to them would make you high, there were even apparently different versions of them that would resemble different high's from different drugs such as Heroin, Meth, etc. I would have tried it however in the same article I saw that there was apparently this guy that did it and went insane and committed suicide or some shit, yeah this was all when I was like 13 and pretty stupid. Even my stupid 13 y/o artificial high seaking marijuana-will-make-me-cooler idiotic brain at the time didn't believe that shit was real, and I laughed at it.

god damnit i meant for this to be a simple question not my life story... curse my wandering mind...ill just highlight the actual question..

I think if they actually did something interesting, it would be very simple to test it scientifically and we'd have studies with very strong evidence. So I call bs.

That's kind of the conclusion I came to. I thought basically that they may have "some" small improvement, but if there was any significant improvement and thousands of the "beats" were just readily available on youtube I would have heard of it by now, or at least scientists would be claiming it as some "breakthrough" if they are readily available and can actually improve or make some noticeable difference.

They definitely have some effects, like stress reduction and basic zoning. But don't expect to start astral projecting and getting psychic powers. Tibetan prayer bowls also work but on a different principle. We are hardwired for music. Soucous music makes me want to dance.

It's bullsh*t. We've been hearing about it for at least 20 years (although the acoustic effect has been known since 19th century) - and no reliable effects have been detected. "Raising brain activity" is just pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo. It's just another gimmick used and promoted by "alternative medicine" crowd...

I believe the brain activity thing, I mean clearly different people have different brain activity levels, and different from the "beats" this seems to make sense. I might butcher it as I don't know the technical definition, but my understanding is basically just a measurement of how active your brain is at any given point, obviously you are going to be thinking more critically and using more of your brain when pondering a bold question like "what is life" than you would when sitting lackadaisically in a class room half paying attention to the teacher reading a section of your science book on micro-organisms.

Obviously there are people who use their brains much more than others throughout the day, regardless of "IQ" levels. To me, "Brain Activity" is simply the measurement of this.

I don't know about this particular effect, but there are some.

Scientists in the lab have used sound feedback to cause a brain storm which leads to OBE (out of body) experiences. But it requires the use of brain monitoring equipment to aid in picking the right frequency to cause the feedback.

I definitely believe that split-sound effects (like voice in one ear and music in the other) can cause unusual states of mind. It's not hard to experiment on, either-- you could start by just putting two mono tracks in a sound editor.

As for white noise etc. etc. I believe there are in fact studies that it affects mood.

--edit-- the following doesn't actually use sound, but current. Same principle, though:

That cannot possibly be healthy.

"Brain Storm"? Even the name sounds frightening.

To respond to your overall post though, I think you are exaggerating. Until I see proof, I don't buy that just "Sounds" alone could create any significant impact on your brain.

Two questions:

1. How do you know that?

2. What do "different brain activity levels" even mean? What's the base-line of "brain activity"? What units are you using to measure it?

I told you very specifically I don't know the definition, clearly indicating I was not an expert on the subject. There's google for a reason you know. I'm not going to get in to an argument over something I am unsure of, and don't care about any ways.

I explained what my description of "Brain activity" is and why I think I "know" that.

Again, #2 are questions you ask google, you will get a direct response. There's no reason to try and start a "debate" with me over this. I simply, and only stated why I think it seems plausible, not why it "definitely" exists.
