This Alabama City Will Now Put Transgender People In Jail For Peeing At Target

On Tuesday night, the City Council of Oxford, Alabama unanimously approved a new ordinance that will punish individuals for using restrooms that do not match their biological sex as stated on their birth certificate. The policy is a direct response to Target indicating that trans people are welcome and will be respected in their stores.

Anywhere within the city’s police jurisdiction, it is now a criminal offense for transgender people to use restrooms that match their gender identity unless they have undergone surgery and successfully changed the gender marker on their birth certificate.

Each individual violation will result in a $500 fine or up to six months in jail. CNN reported this week that “most people urinate four to seven times during a day.”

The ordinance is actually more expansive than North Carolina’s HB2, which only applies to government buildings and public schools and universities.

In a prepared statement after the ordinance’s passage, Council President Steven Waits said that the council passed it “not out of concerns for the 0.3 percent of the population who identify as transgender,” but “to protect our women and children,” according to the Anniston Star.

Literally the whole thing. You (not at all surprisingly) missed the entirety of what that person said. That poster points out just how unnecessary but telling these laws are. You clearly missed the point. The laws don't fix anything. The very same threat existed before the laws, and will exist after they are challenged and found to be unconstitutional.

We teach our boys to go out and get sex, we congratulate each other on 'scoring.' We routinely talk about women as the sum total of their body parts. We further this idea in society that rape is just a thing men will do if given the opportunity, and so we must make sure women know that they are responsible for not tempting us men into showing our true nature. Transgender people using the fucking bathroom isn't the issue. They were doing it before you decided to become intentionally ignorant on the subject, they'll continue to do it. You just want to use them as a scapegoat for your glorification and intentional continuance of rape culture.

If I lived in that area - and I wouldn't, I already lived in Alabama for too long in my distant past - where was I... Oh yeah, if I lived in that area I'd make sure to call out any of the knobheads that passed this turd of a law I saw using whatever bathroom they thought proper.
