Hours after Orlando’s gay nightclub became the worst mass shooting in American history, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick posted a Bible verse on Facebook and Twitter, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” After the Internet freaked out, Patrick took it down. He said the verses are chosen in advance, and it was unfortunate timing. He’s not the homophobe, God is.

The shooter’s father, an Afghan immigrant named Seddique Mir Mateen, posted a video saying he has “no idea what caused him to shoot last night” but that “God himself will punish for homosexuality – it is not for people to decide.” Guess Junior didn’t get the nuance.

When someone shoots up a gay nightclub, the question isn’t, “Was religion involved?” It’s “Which one?” Because here’s a headline you never read: “Secular humanist goes on anti-gay rampage.”

There’s a cottage industry now, mostly among liberals, to immediately declare religion not guilty of having anything whatsoever to do with any violent event. The reason I think it’s important to call out the link isn’t just to help prevent other attacks like this. Very few gay people will be killed in a nightclub. But how many go to a nightclub thinking, “If my dad knew I was here, he’d kill me?”

That Saturday night pain usually comes from what’s heard in pews Sunday mornings, and in mosques throughout the week. You can’t fight for liberal values in this society unless you butt heads with that.
