Problem is that the US relies a lot on foreign scientists from all around the world. MIT may be world renowned but it's most certainly not staffed fully by American scientists. The applies to all academic institutions across the world. For example I worked in a world famous institute of biology in my last job and the UK scientists were probably outnumbered. So just by closing down the borders, stopping immigration, stopping funding and making America a hostile place to live Trump is hurting the scientific community. The same thing is happening in the UK.

Foreign scientists are welcome in both the US and the UK, it is mass immigration that needs to and will stop. Foreign scientists don't feel welcome though and worry about whether they can build a future in the UK. They live under a cloud of uncertainty about their future. More so than normal as a scientist. Especially when you read of cases where they apply for permanent residence, have to jump over many hoops and if they don't fill out the form 100% correctly are then told that they should be prepared to leave the UK within weeks after having lived here for 20 years, married a native and have children born here. Short fixed term contracts are really common in academia and science. Scientists go to many international conferences where they can be offered jobs by other scientists. Most academic institutions around the world have knowledge of English because most papers are written in English. So it's not hard for scientists to move out of the UK or US. It seems that I was right to do so. Is that as low as name calling, and resorting to the genetic fallacy? Also they do cite back to Reuters if you would prefer. And again, I'm still waiting for a little more direct and detailed testimony, for evidence; rather than what appears to be vague gossip. Here we do have a reputable news source, referring to an official statement by one of the agencies. While I do fear, that too many on both sides are heading in this direction; I also have hope that we haven't gotten to that point yet. Or at least, that it doesn't escalate further. But I think that ideas should be judged based on their content and reasons, not based on the source or its conclusion. |
