RE: Would You Boycott a Business Because of the Owner's Political Views?

I live in Tennessee, it is a safe assumption that most businesses are Christian owned, and the owners probably share many or at least some of the beliefs that I find abhorrent.
I would never go out of my way to avoid patronizing a place just because they believe these things. I would, however, if they posted a sign in the window saying "Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve" or "Trump is a Gift from God," advertising their position.

What about companies that want to make a political view you strongly disagree with a matter of their company policy, as Chick-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby have?

To be fair, it's a safe assumption that any business in the U.S. is christian owned. Even in the most secular states, they are still the majority. But, like you said, going out of the way to avoid them without some external expression of backwards, vile views (which not all christians adhere to) is a waste of time and effort.

What have hobby lobby and chik fil a done?
I know the owner of chick fil a donates money to christian groups who, naturally being Christian, believe marriage is between man and woman. and the owners of hobby lobby are against abortion so their insurance won't cover 4 types of contraceptives which cause abortion. Is that it, or am I missing something here?

Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Chick-Fil-A has taken an openly anti-gay stance and Hobby Lobby has used their corporate power to garner exemption from the law to enforce their beliefs on their employees.
Both have tried to spin their attempts at making their beliefs part of their company policies, but I'll refuse to do business with either as I believe those beliefs abhorrent.

Right, so have they done anything besides what I just mentioned?

Hobby Lobby has forever changed the societal landscape in using their money to ensure that corporations now have precedent, and have first amendment rights to free speech. This is absolutely atrocious to me. I don't have much use for hobby stores to begin with, but I will go out of my way to go to a Jo-Annes or a Michaels instead.

I actually used to really love Hobby Lobby. Until they started their political shenanigans, they used to get a lot of business from me. Even former loyal customers like me are done with them.

There's definitely a line. Everyone can't just do whatever they want and call it "freedom of religion," obviously. But I don't think what hobby lobby did crossed that line. There are something like 20ish different types of birth control that insurance will cover. Four of those 20 types of birth control are more notorious for causing abortions. The family who owns hobby lobby is very strongly against abortions and understandably don't want to pay for insurance for those 4 specific types of birth control. But they will pay for the other 16 or so. Also, I heard they pay their employees well above minimum as a starting pay, so it's not like they don't care for or value their employees.
Anyway, I don't see how that is unreasonable, if that's all they've done. I'm sure I'd probably do the same if I owned my own business.
With that being said, even if I was pro abortion, I'd still not boycott them for that. As I said, It'd be hard to find a business who didn't do something I was opposed to.

CL, you need to do more reading on the 4 types and their mechanism of actions. The "notorious for causing abortion" is a falsehood.

Depends how serious
Personally, no. I would only boycott if the owners took it as far as to discriminate against customers and lobby for oppressive political policies.
I wouldn't boycott over someone simply voicing disagreement with the womens' march but doing nothing actually to stop it, that seems a bit petty to me (other people have the right to boycott if they want to, I just think it's a bit petty)
