Atheist Churches

RE: Atheist Churches
I started an atheist meetup a while back. I made all the get togethers be at a bar lol

Then they started wanting more official stuff and I let someone take over. Dude. I just wanted to have some beers with heretics. When it becomes an obligation, no thanks.

Yeah, there should be an athiest church somewhere.

It's ok, nobody's going to judge you here. Laugh all you want to.

I'll bet you just transubstantiated your little ass off.

Oh, wait.

RE: Atheist Churches
I'm not really interested in joining in on a group simply because of shared atheism. Atheism is simply a lack of belief in any god, so what's there to talk about in the absence of theists? Now if there's an actual point to a group beyond that, why not just make it secular and forget about the religious focus in the first place?

Yeah, I realize this site is kinda a "shared-atheism" thing. That's why we invite theists to make things interesting.

^^^ this ^^^

It wouldn't be a church, don't call it one. Leave word misappropriation to others.

My town is full of commited religious folks. Church always comes up. If you bring up certain topics, the conversation might not have the chill effect you intended. People will be having fun, drinking, then you relax and make a joke and boom. Wwjd? Lol

I met some really awesome atheists when I had the group. We still have contact. We often coincide at other community events that involve the arts, politics, charity, etc. We don't plan to, but coincidences are great! I can let my heretic sense of humor run wild around them. No risk of getting the pointing finger lol

Oh I have no problem with specifically hanging out with atheists. Like others have said, calling it a church makes it sound like you're just going to preach about atheism all the time. Getting together to do other activities (which points it more towards secularism) could be a lot of fun.

RE: Atheist Churches
One thing that really throws the fundies about atheists as a breed is we're a pretty diffuse bunch, with no clear target for their ire. It's why they have to go after the more prominent, celebrity 'atheist heads'; they have leaders and preachers, so to them we must too. Having a church will only give them a focal point. Far better that they never know from which direction will come the next attack, as it were.

Same here, I have zero interest in a mutual masturbation society.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.
