um . . .

my seeming relentless slamming of Mormonism might have been experienced by you as rather harsh in view of the family thing . . .

I'm not sure what to say about it . . . .

Oh I appreciated every one of them.  The vampires got to him at a low point.  Trash them all you like.  I'll hum along.

A relief. Wasn't sure how my 'shtick' was playing from your angle.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

I'm sorry for you loss, my friend Sad
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

For whatever it's worth, sorry to hear about his passing. Death is almost never a good thing..

But I get where you're coming from. Both of my brothers are stubborn, inconsiderate people. I've always said, it's one thing to be selfish, it's another thing entirely to be inconsiderate. My brothers have never really made an effort to be in my life, so I've made no effort to be in their lives. And I can't really say that I feel their absence that much. It's sort of just a non-issue.

Family is a privilege, not a right. Quite honestly I'd rather surround myself with people I enjoy being around than suffer through having relationships with people I can't stand just because "they're family."
“Love is the only bow on Life’s dark cloud. It is the morning and the evening star. It shines upon the babe, and sheds its radiance on the quiet tomb. It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher.

It is the air and light of every heart – builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth. It was the first to dream of immortality. It fills the world with melody – for music is the voice of love.

Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to Joy, and makes royal kings and queens of common clay. It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart, and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon, we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.” - Robert. G. Ingersoll

I'm not 'closer' to any of my actual DNA relatives than I am to at the very least, my "Top 25" gay friends. I've considered that 'gang' my actual family since college days back in the 70s.

And many/most of them are the same about that. During the AIDS crisis back in the 80s we all found it galling how hospitals refused to acknowledge that in regards to visitation.

(One notable exception was those I was helping in the HIV Volunteer group I was in. One time with 'R', the family was ordered out of his room for a procedure, and I was allowed to stay.)

Sorry to hear that, Whateverist.
It's funny in a weird way how family members can turn out so differently.
The cliché that you can't choose your family is true but thank goodness as adults we can choose to whom we will or won't give our time and efforts.

RE: So my older brother is being buried today.
My biological father died 2 years ago. He didn't raise me. I only talked to him on the phone once a few months before he died just so he could say is piece. But I also wouldn't have gone to his funeral anyway. I don't think you owe family any explanation. Sometimes family members don't get along and it isn't healthy to force it especially if you feel like they are emotionally draining you.

On one hand sorry for your loss

On the other I totally get were your coming from. I have 7 siblings and I know one who's funeral I won't be attending. After all he did attend my fathers ungrateful bastard .
Seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy -- myself.
