RE: The Spanish Inquisition?
Really? just now. Long story short, religious hysteria became a profit driven enterprise and a lot of people were burned to death, not a single one a wiccan..and still they have their burning times banners.

(the best thing that came out of the whole ordeal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malleus_Maleficarum )
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Never heard of it in my life. Never was mentioned in social studies. But thank you for the summary Smile

RE: The Spanish Inquisition?
Lemme give you a rundown of how inquisitors rolled.

Step 1 They'd come into town, and accuse an outcast of witchcraft. Scapegoating that person for whatever bad had befallen the village. No one cares about the outcast, bad things have happened, and they are very superstitious.

Step 2 They would get some "witnesses", torture the accused, and then execute them (though not always). Now they have a confession by torture, and it's very likely that they pressured the original witch for names of co-conspirators. Gives you people to go after when you're done with the "in".

Step 3 Profit. Inquisitors could collect administrative fees out of the accused's personal effects.

Inquisitors were pretty much roving prosecutors (presumably)in service of the church.

(the whole accuse an outsider, make the village a participant in your scam and then implicate them for cash is brilliant isn't it?)

RE: The Spanish Inquisition?
Originally, the inquisition was about was about getting rid of heretics, especially the Cathars. Unlike the great unwashed, the Church denied the existence of witches of popular imagination for centuries.(just like say vampires and werewolves)

The inquisition evolved into an especially long version of the witch hunt, still found in many societies. (also called scape goating*) It's also about institutional and personal power and wealth; victim's assets were seized and one's opponents were silenced or judicially murdered.

Let's not forget those most infamous of witch hunts, the Salem witch craft trials and the power-mad nuttery of Senator Joe McCarthy and his "House Of unamerican activities"

Quote:The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings before county court trials to prosecute people accused of witchcraft in the counties of Essex, Suffolk, and Middlesex in colonial Massachusetts, between February 1692 and May 1693. Despite being generally known as the Salem witch trials, the preliminary hearings in 1692 were conducted in a variety of towns across the province: Salem Village (now Danvers), Ipswich, Andover and Salem Town.

Quote:Joseph Raymond "Joe" McCarthy (November 14, 1908 – May 2, 1957) was an American politician who served as a Republican U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin from 1947 until his death in 1957. Beginning in 1950, McCarthy became the most visible public face of a period in which Cold War tensions fueled fears of widespread Communist subversion.[1] He was noted for making claims that there were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers inside the United States federal government and elsewhere. Ultimately, McCarthy's tactics and his inability to substantiate his claims led him to be censured by the United States Senate.

*current example;the UK hacking scandal has elements of witch hunting..

**Stalin and Mao loved witchhunts, and had heaps of them them.

Tangent
It's worth noting that "The Office Of The Holy Inquisition" still exists under the name of "The Office For The Protection Of The Faith".Its last head was the current bum warming the chair of St Peter.

I'm playing Medieval2 Total War and those damn inquisitors tend to kill all of my +3command, +3 dread, outspoken atheist generals. They killed my 10 command king just when I was facing the mongol invasion, just because he was called "The Ungodly".

Yep, when you least expect them.
