What's everyone up to right now?
RE: What's everyone up to right now?
Yeah, I have a Mana Shim PTFC jersey and a Thorns t, and both were bought online. Soccer stores here in San Diego just have national teams and Euro men's club jerseys. FML

Looking at tickets for the Portland Timbers match on Sunday. Ugh, only non-single seat tickets available are way up in the corner in/by the visitor's section.

...Thorns?

I don't mind baseball, but it's one of those things I have on in the background while I'm doing something else. My main sports entertainment is the NFL and NHL. Baseketball bores me most of the time... it's one of those games where it seems like the first 44 minutes don't matter, and the last 4 take forever because of all the timeouts. I'll watch if the Celtics are in the playoffs, but otherwise meh.

There's a ton of college sports around here, but football and hockey take up most of the attention. Hockey East is especially big, given the number of schools in New England (UMaine, UNH, BC, BU, UMass, etc.) and their proximity to each other.

Women's professional soccer team in the NWSL.

Of the USWNT players, the Thorns can lay claim to Tobin Heath, Lindsay Horan Meghan Klingenbeger, Allie Long...  We used to have Alex Morgan until she moved to Orlando.  We have Christine Sinclair as captain, second all-time scorer in women's association soccer (first being Abby Wambach who is now retired) but she plays for Canada internationally.  We have Nadia Nadim who just helped the Danish National team to a second place finish in the EUFA women's cup (I think), and Amandine Henry who plays for France's national team, Haley Raso who plays for Australia, and Dagny Brynjarsdottir who plays for Iceland internationally...

IOW we have some pretty awesome ladies kickin' it for Portland soccer.

That's what drives me nuts about football - run 10 yards, have a time out.  Run 40 yards, score a touchdown, commercial break. Run 3 yards, commercial break. Lose 5 yards calla time out.  it turns an hour long game into 4 goddamn hours!

My dad stopped watching the NBA because he thought they were just dragging everything out so that they could sell more tickets and play more commercials, but doesn't see that's exactly what the NFL does, too - time out after time out so they can break for commericals and sell you shit knowing you'll stick around to see how the game ends!

That's one reason I can stand to watch soccer on TV - only commercials are before and after the game, at half time and during hydration break if there even are any! otherwise it's 45 minutes+ of uninterrupted game.

My daughter got a crink in her neck from sitting the wrong way in bed whilst reading last night.
She's woken up as a grumpy bum and I think I just narrowly avoided a meltdown.
It's lovely and rainy here at the moment, makes coffee taste good.

Oh yeah, the ads during a football game are atrocious. But, even with that, I think it's a more watchable game than basketball. At the very least, it feels like the games are less likely to come down to the final few minutes, and each score feels meaningful. When each team makes 40-60 buckets a night, it really removes the importance of each one.

I like soccer when the teams have talented players. Unfortunately, being up in Revs land, the games are boring/frustrating to watch. It's just 90+ minutes of bad passes, bad decisions, a complete lack of cohesion....

I think all of this is why I'm a pretty big hockey fan. Lots of action (even if some games get choppy with whistles/penalties, it's not really much different than a glut of free kicks/out-of-bounds with some soccer matches), lots of skill (the NHL is moving away from clutching/grabbing and talentless goons fighting each other to a much faster game based on offense), few ad breaks compared to everything except soccer (typically just 2-3/period), and every goal is meaningful.

Irony: I'm booking an appointment to see a colleague.

Apparently I'm not allowed to diagnose myself!

There's the mighty Thorns team page on the league website. New England's team is the Boston Breakers (not sure what part of NE you are).

I'm out of market, so I do live near a WPSL (div II league) side: LA Galaxy San Diego.

As for me, I'm watching a SpaceX launch. First stage already touched back down fine. They are using a used rocket.

I worked in MILSATCOM for many years. We had to depend on LMA and Boeing, later ULA, for launch vehicles. SpaceX got a lot of people from those companies, and are beating the pants off them boys with that rocket that can return to a launch pad and be recycled for launch in 48 hours. Both things were just unheard of until they did it. And they're doing it for a fraction of the cost.
