I just didn't get the feeling that he was dismissing Hammy. I got the sense that it was a, "You're fine the way you are. There, there" kind of thing. I could be wrong.

That was definitely his primary sentiment. He was wishing me well, and being positive.

Being the kind of guy I am I felt like I had to correct the parts he said that are inaccurate lol.

Minimalist is of the older generation. Of course they would think like that. And what does Ritalin have to do with autism? lol, man. I like you, but damn ...

It's the whole drug culture, man.  The government rules some drugs bad but others are poured into people like they were fucking water.

My comments were certainly no knock on Hammy, who I only know from here where he is popular, witty and, when he wishes to be, quite profound.  My objection, and it may well be a generational thing, is that I am not comfortable with having a bunch of shrinks say "there are acceptable limits to human behavior and if we determine that you are out of that range there is something "wrong" with you that we will attempt to fix with drugs or at $150/hour therapy sessions."  Then we quickly see school administrators jump on the bandwagon because all those fucks care about is "order."  Its a convenient way to take their problem cases and make them a problem for someone else.  

The whole trend is far too 1984-ish for my tastes.  I recall the following quote from H. L. Mencken.

The great artists of the world are never Puritans, and seldom even ordinarily respectable. No virtuous man — that is, virtuous in the Y.M.C.A. sense — has ever painted a picture worth looking at, or written a symphony worth hearing, or a book worth reading.

Like I said earlier.  I'm a cranky old fart.... but I don't like the long-term trends I'm seeing.

Because a world full of entirely neurotypical people would be a world where many of the greatest scientific discoveries, most beautiful works of art and most beautiful pieces of music do not exist.

But the problem covers far more than just autism.  It's the homogenizing of humanity which really bothers me.

And C/L - there are some excellent movie versions of it out there but the book is really best.
