...and now that he's had his first meeting with Kim?

It's a positive step forward, but as others have pointed out, the agreement they signed was pretty tame. Don't get me wrong, a meeting is a meeting, that's something positive, but NK have pulled this kind of thing before. If NK makes actual concessions from this new relationship, credit will have to go to Trump.

That was just the initial meeting with more to come. But, I thought their first meeting went well. The U.S. is now set for more talks soon with "specific asks".

Never mind positive, how is this a step forward, in any direction?

A meeting between a North Korean leader and a US President is a step forward.

The only agreement is both sides agree there is an agreement regarding a nuclear free nirvana they’ve always agreed as being nice to have, is still nice to have.

Right, which is why I said we will have to see if NK makes actual concessions.

The ultimate conclusion will be, the nice nirvana not withstanding, North Korea will continue to possess nuclear weapons able to strike the United States while, in the best of circumstances, the US will no longer freak out about it.

But kindly recall the freaking out was done by trump.

The US has been "freaking out" about NK nuclear weapons for years. That goes further back than Trump. There's a good reason for freaking out about them: South Korea / Japan are close allies, and Hawaii is a potential target for NK missiles.

In return for showing the opportunity to show an Unfreaked-out side of trump, the US agreed to take a strategic step backwards.

Do you think for a moment that if NK refuses to actually do anything, Trump won't just reinstate the military exercises with South Korea? Trump, if anything, has been obsessed with showing military strength.

The lesson for the world is, get a nuclear weapon, get the US to freak out, burp the US, and you get to keep the weapon, the US takes a step back from their posture before you got your weapon.

I disagree. The big difference here is Chinese support. China have long supported North Korea and that has caused havoc with potential US-NK relations. Personally I think without the decline in Chinese relations with NK, which has happened pretty steadily over a few years (even before Trump), this meeting would have never happened. China have been supporting sanctions against NK since early 2016.

2.  It would be a mightily ambarassing for trump to admit having been had and having to reinstate the exercises.   He will not do it unless he can’t wiggle his way out.  North Korea will leave him just enough “face” so he wouldn’t be backed into a wall on this issue.  But North Korea will not have to give up anything substantiation to preserve the new status quo.

3.  The only difference China made was how loud North Korean saber rattling would be.  It makes no difference whatsoever to North Korean determination and ability to develop, deploy, and keep their nuclear arsenal.  To the degree that China helped on the margins, how long will China keep helping on the margins  now that a trade war has been declared between the US and China?

The singular hall mark of trumpian diplomacy is thinking he can get somewhere by acting like the petulant child towards 72% of the world’s economy when the US has only 22% of the world’s economy, and thinking good relations with the remaining 5% is all that matters.
