If you're an Atheist, what comforts you?
November 2, 2018 at 4:06 pm

I'm someone in transition who's pretty close to being an atheist, so I would not suggest that atheists have nothing to live for or some of the other ignorant ideas people have about atheists. Just wanted to get that out of the way.
That said, I am having a lot of depression and anxiety that, back when I was a believer, I'd be coping with by praying. Now prayer is out, so I wanted to ask a general question:
What brings you comfort when life is hard? I'm especially interested in any book recommendations or videos that I can turn to repeatedly when times are tough. They don't have to be by atheists or about atheism. Any secular source will do.
thanks

Probably support from friends and family are important for most people, but I've never been most people.
For me, I find comfort in the non-human mundane; such as playing a video game.

I take comfort from the fact that we are all in the same boat, regardless of what we believe.
In other words we're all fucked.

Meditation, mindfulness and knowing that the religious are wrong.
The thought that tomorrow can be different.
I know it sounds stupid but gratitude lists sometimes work.

My family is composed of fundamentalist Christians, even my extended relatives, so they are no comfort. I'm working on making more secular friends, but don't have many, and making new ones is taking a while. This is part of the reason I was hoping for comforting book.

Any particular form of meditation that helps you? Or is that what you meant--mindfulness meditation?
I don't think the gratitude lists are stupid at all.

Maybe look back and realise that when god was giving you strength and comfort, you were really giving it to yourself. You deserve the credit for everything you’ve done.
I recommend animals and meditation.

Wisdom of Insecurity by Alan Watts. Completely changed my perception of the world around me, and it is something I routinely reread in difficult times. He also has plenty of lectures on YouTube.
Some may not be receptive to his words, as some consider his writings should fall under the category of "truisms"; though I'd disagree with that. Hes also been lumped in with New Age, but he isn't. He essentially interprets ancient Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. And hes a brilliant writer and orator.
I follow both a Stoic and Taoist (surprisingly similar) philosophy that shapes my actions and words.

I've thought of that, but even a crutch gets leaned on. Animals and meditation: I have two pets, and they do help. Any particular form of meditation that has helped you?

Sounds worth checking out! Thanks for the recommendation. The book certainly has many good reviews.
