Na, the middle class is fucking -chocked- with racist dirtbags.  They're just genteel about it.  The "crime", in that sense, isn't being racist, it's exposing that racism.

Try it sometime, go to your nearest gated communities wine tasting - test the waters with a white victimization narrative, and when that sticks the landing, drop n bombs to the sound of uproarious applause.  I know, I know, slimy, right?  You could always summon the crickets with a deadpan "so, just how racist are you guys, anyway" at the end.

Yeah, yankees do like to pretend that racism is a southern issue.  Thing is, it actually is a pretty fair representation of america as a whole. Poll after poll after poll, study after study after study, metrics by the mountain - still, I suspect because we really wish it were true, we imagine that it's a small thing with regional pockets.

Fun stuff, but, as A Southern Person incapable of and uninterested in minimizing my heritage - I have an advantage on the racist radar front.

The smiling Bob and Sandy types gravitate towards me tacitly assuming a friendly audience for airing their white grievance. They hear that drawl and just can't help but share the damned good jokes and talking points they've been bottling up. I laugh, ofc, but I'm laughing about how they're the third Bob and Sandy that night - all of them terrified of being found out by each other. Used to really wig the fuck out of the wife.

You could be right. Growing up I was always told that southerners were racists (among other things). Maybe I was too sheltered to see that it wasn’t just southerners.

I will say this, having lived in both the north and the south for many years, at the very least southerners are A LOT less shy about their racism. If the rest of America is as racist as southerners, they hide it a lot better.

Ultimately, my comfort with the fact of racism is as much a product of that trend as is the casual racism you mentioned earlier. I don't think what Billy Bob thinks, but I'm as comfortable with him, and the fact that so many Billy Bobs think it as he is. Start talking racism with somebody north of the mason dixon and they'll launch some shit about "many fine people". A southern racist just acknowledges that x is racist, and they love it, lol.

Well he wasn't just "some old man". He was a drunken asshole and racist instigator.

Does that warrant the beat-down? No, not in my book. 
But it doesn't evoke any sympathy from me.
He was a drunk who drunkenly decided to insult an entire bar of potentially drunk patrons at the last moment and got roughed up for his trouble.
Racist element aside, this is definitely the sort of shit my brain would normally file under Drunk People Problems.

Was he drunk? I don't know. Do you know that? He was angry. He was saying something about one of them nearly running him over.
I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for him either. His conduct was certainly disorderly. Racist instigator? I don't know. People use the most offensive words they can come up with when they are angry. That doesn't make them racist instigators. It just makes them angry people who are saying hurtful things. If he's a racist instigator, then so are a whole bunch of black people who say racist things about white people when they get angry. But I usually don't see them as racist instigators. I just see them as being angry people who are intentionally saying offensive things because they are angry.

His speech sounded quite drunk to me.

Though, the ignoring of insurmountable odds while screaming "You...Monkey-azz muhfuggin N**GER-azz!" into bar full of black patrons is kind of a dead giveaway too.

Anyhow, I'm quite comfortable concluding that this guy is/was a racist instigator, despite your adamance that he "probably didn't mean it". And how you view Black people's comments about white people is of no consequence in the matter. You were entirely too eager to create a false analogy earlier in this thread in mischaracterizing a reaction to racist acts as racism itself.

Makes it rather hard to take your musings on what's racist seriously.
