Declawing Cats

I have no idea what this thread is now, but I want to say I'm generally against declawing cats. Are we still discussing that?

My sister has a deaf cat (Salt) who she declawed because she would scratch people and (being deaf) was unresponsive to auditory cues. She did not violently scratch. But she did scratch. I debated with my sister that it was perhaps unethical to declaw her, but (in the end) my sister has a 7 year old son. She is in a position to accomodate a deaf cat, but she didn't want her son and others being scratched.

While I think that declawing cats is generally unethical, I also think that there are certain situations (like my sister's cat) in which it might be permissible.

Well, they don't simply cut off the claws.  The cats' toes are partially amputated.  Sort of like if you were to cure a child's nail-biting by amputating his fingers at the first joint.

Secondly, neutering is good. It increases a cat's life span and makes the animal generally healthier. It also helps to reduce the population of feral cats.

Lastly, animals don't have a 'sex life' as you imagine it.

It IS possible to vasectomize a cat. But people like altering the cat's behavior via surgery.

Vasectomizing a cat may help reduce feral populations, no doubt about it.  But it doesn't lower the risk of testicular cancer.

The primary difference between neutering and declawing is that neutering has proven benefits to the cat, declawing doesn't.  Quite the contrary - declawing a cat causes back pain and possible atrophy, foot pain, risk of infection, can cause nerve damage and bone spurs, and removes the cat's primary means of defense.
