More farms actually don't require more water, and more farms aren't needed to feed more people. We're just incredibly wasteful and inefficient in areas that we can get away with. I agree that somebody will have to pay the piper unless we do something about it. A warming planet opens vast tracts of land to agriculture btw. Plants do very well when this rock gets hot.

Hardly.

A few elements of the periodic table want a word with you on the first part. You assert the latter part over and over again, without ever establishing what 'too much' is. Certainly it isn't enough for the capitalists to stop squeezing even more blood from stones.
Quote:Fresh water goes into farms, factories and homes.
I hear it also falls out of the sky. Potential answers to your problems here: remove animal farms, insert hydroponics farms (little-no water wasted), efficient 'green' factories that don't pollute the water (i don't see how a machine could otherwise 'waste' it), and make every home's water usage efficient. We can't exactly keep everyone from sweating, but we certainly can keep recycling their urine and shit.
Quote:More farms are needed for an ever growing population, more farms require more space and water.
Subterrenian -> space. Hydroponics -> water.
Quote:We're running out of both of these.
Got some space in the north. Lots of it. And a whole continent down south. Australia is pretty empty of people across most of it. And then there's always underground and on the ocean floor/surface of the ocean. I'm not following you on the space running out just yet. And since we're so busy running out of water: why not make more? Or find more. It's harder getting down here, sure... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_table but tell me it's not there. Can. Wrong. Doubt it. Though I do await the revolution

For clarity's sake... we are referring to 'waste water' as in 'dirty' (meaning we are simply too lazy to clean it up), yes?
Thats the rub, fix the shit we know is broke and then tell me what the carrying capacity is.

A lot of Australia is either desert or at most semi-desert, if you were to over-impose a map of Australia over the Sahara desert, that would show you how much habitable land there is in Australia.
Given the high rainfall variability in Australia, you could consider that whole area colored with grassland and desert as arid, with most of the remainder being semi-arid.

If you listen to David Attenborough you'll get it. Sure technologies etc will help to put a sticking plaster on the problem. Fact is though there's a finite amount of people, and other animals that a finite amount of resources = the fresh water supply, can support. Currently that's 9bn. We have 40 years left to make that stretch. We should buy ourselves more time, but we will reach the limit some time.
My favourite quote from Ace's video link: Sustainable Growth is an oxymoron. Awesome
So nature has a limit where population cannot exceed it. <insert science fiction fantasy here>

'Habitable' ≠ 'inhabitable'. You can build on desert as easily as fertile plains.
Anyway, that's not the point: we get more than half our food from overseas... and water probably not dissimilar. There is no reason you can't build a city anywhere (as long as you've figured out how to build there), since there's always a way or six to make it work

40 years to find a way to drink seawater. Someone'll get it done eventually.
Quote:So nature has a limit where population cannot exceed it. <insert science fiction fantasy here>
Only a fantasy till it's done (ie: submarines). Jules verne comes to mind as science fantasies becoming a reality. I see no reason it can't be done (converting seawater into drinking water) given enough money, time, and effort by people qualified to try.
One requires a lot of resources, advance technology and time. They both are impractical and hugely expensive.
Quote:Got some space in the north. Lots of it. And a whole continent down south. Australia is pretty empty of people across most of it. And then there's always underground and on the ocean floor/surface of the ocean.
You're only delaying the problem. That tactic has already been used. It's still in use. We need a solution not a delay.
Quote:I'm not following you on the space running out just yet.
Space won't matter, water is the first to run out. Farms do however take huge amounts of space and a lot of water.
Quote:And since we're so busy running out of water: why not make more?
Converting sea water is hugely expensive and only delays the problem. It doesn't solve it.
Quote:Or find more.
Many colostral bodies contain much water. Don't know how to collect it yet. But even if we did, it would cost trillions.
Quote:And when scientists figure out how to make saltwater drinkable... I hope to all fucking hell you doomsayers shut up.[/b]
We can convert salt water to fresh, but it's extremely expensive. It also doesn't solve the problem. Also doomsayers as you call them, not all are wrong. Religious wackos, I'd ignore and laugh at any day. They assert without evidence. Naturalists on the other hand, tend to have first hand experience with decades of research with the backing of scientists. Some warnings must be heeded.
Quote:Adapt.
How can we adapt without water? Try this, go a whole week without water and let me know how well you adapted to it. Starving Africans go through it all the time. They don't live for very long.
Quote:'When they run out': they aren't going to run out.
I wish you were right. But our reservoirs say different.
Quote:Need is a very strong word. Anyway: adapt.
Like I said, life depends on water. Without it, it dies.
Quote:Get over it: life dies. Often horribly.
Doesn't have to for us. But being blind to the ever growing problem will be our undoing.
Quote:Don't kid yourself: people will never learn.
Then we are forced to repeat our mistakes.
Quote:Or better, if you happen to live in alaska, russia, antarctica, or canada.
No, that's a bad thing. Planet warms up, ice caps melt, ocean rises, less land, less space...you get the picture.
Quote:I have no problems, hakuna matata Can't stand that some people see that we adapt? Okay?
Somethings we cannot adapt to. We have our limitations.
The solution to the problem is not finding or producing more water, it's controlling our population. We don't have to face water shortages. We will if we don't do something now.
