Wireheading anyone??
November 1, 2011 at 4:15 pm
I found this article online today concerning a new concept called wireheading. Apparently with the aid of implanted electrodes in the pleasure centres of the brain, people can have 24/7 uninterruped bliss. This type of technology throws up all kinds of ethical questions and I'm sure it will divide opinion in all quarters, but I just thought I'd share it here and see what you guys thought, here's the link..

Sounds like a plan.

Not new. Larry Niven used it as a minor plot hook in his
Ringworld novels back in the 70's. Generally portrayed as a bad idea unless you've already lived ~200 years & are bored as hell. I think he even called the users wireheads.

Fantasy and Sci-Fi are great breeding grounds for future researchers. The one thing that always strikes me though, is that we've imagined dystopias more frequently than utopias by a wide margin.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I think it's all you would need to enslave most people. Just bliss them when they do what you want and with hold bliss when they don't. I can see specialized versions that give you pleasure when you're working, or doing math, or learning to play the piano. I couldn't blame my boss for putting me on one, I spend way too much time on the interwebz at work.
