teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Shouldn't this be the game stopper for religious when they see clergy demanding from others to kneel before them? I mean who in their right mind does that?

It all comes down to "We know the truth so there's no need to look any further." Any source that potentially contradicts that truth must be marginalized. Sources that directly contradict that truth must be destroyed. That is why Christianity has tussled with all the sciences, but declared war on biology -- because if fully understood biology flatly contradicts the Bible in ways that can't be hand waved away.
