@Tiberius
I know last year you mentioned interest in divesting from AF? If so, there is interest in keeping it going and taking over the financial obligation. I personally would like to do a lift-and-shift into AWS. Interested?
Per Whois, the domain expires June 26 (or, thereabouts), but, yes, if Tiberius wants to transfer ownership, I would be willing to pick-up the tab.

And would this shift into AWS involve any of our former posts being deleted? I hope not, but I'm currently in the process of saving my Deep Hurting Project posts just in case (I think I'm about a quarter of the way there now.)

It can be. *If* it can run Fargate, and I think it can, it can be run very cheaply. The most expensive component is the DB and it's storage. If you have to run it in EC2 (i.e. virtualized Linux hosts), it's less cheap, but you can still autoscale very cheap virtual hardware.

The whole goal of a lift and shift is to preserve data and function. So, yes, that is my goal. Tiberius holds the keys, so it's really up to him the direction things go.

And, of course, we all have our time, and so, it would be a good idea for Tiberius (or anyone else) to make sure that a backup admin can pick up the reins if need be. As for the ultimate cheapo server, one could configure things as a Tor hidden service and then publicize the .onion address on Usenet or whatever, but, volume to the site would plummet, as Google would not be crawling it, but, it would be the ultimate in cheapness. Of course, there would be more administrative overhead, as one would need to perform regular backups, which brings me to this not-so-pithy quote:

I think a clearnet forum would be ideal, Jehanne.

The server costs have nothing to do with the site being on the public internet. Making it a Tor-only service doesn't magically remove the need for database storage and the hardware needed to actually handle the forum software without significant lag. It would also destroy usability, and Tor isn't exactly known for its speed either.
