The purpose is for Paul to show that Christianity is pro-slavery.

TheWhiteMarten Wrote:the Church condemned slavery long before

So the Church condemned slavery by having slaves.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Quote:The purpose is for Paul to show that Christianity is pro-slavery.

Incorrect.

Ephesians 6, written by Paul during a period of enslavement in Rome, a few years before his beheading...

Quote: "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear and sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6And do this not only to please them while they are watching, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7Serve with good will, as to the Lord and not to men, 8because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.

9And masters, do the same for your slaves. Give up your use of threats, because you know that He who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with Him."

The reality of the Roman Empire was that slavery was legal; in some ways it differed from how we view it in the modern world and in some ways it was even more inhumane and vile; Christians made up - at this point - less than 1% of the total empire and Jews only a few % more.

Telling slaves, "Do not give up hope, live your life with dignity and to prove to the nonbeliever and the slaver the sincerity of your belief, the truth of your convictions that they might be converted and saved and that you might be rewarded in heaven for your suffering." is not a statement of a "pro-slavery" ideology, and the fact that Christianity would initially spread like wildfire amongst the slaves of the empire - to go on to abolish slavery within the Roman Empire - would be a pretty good indicator that it was never a part of doctrine.

Quote:So the Church condemned slavery by having slaves.

Atheist owned slaves in the 1800s, does that mean that atheists today condone slavery?

1. More white washing

2. A religion being popular among slaves is not evidence it's not pro slavery

3.Atheists weren't using atheism as a justification to own slaves. Atheism cannot by default condone anything as it's not an ideology. Also no atheist can ever held responsible for the actions of another as there is no common ideology that links them Christianity does not have that defense.

4. It's also funny that the passage from Paul is the same one confederates slave owners used to justify slavery.

It is pro-slavery especially since Christianity kept slavery for the next 2000 years. And if you look at the Bible, it never at any point condemns slavery but embraces it and tells people to have slaves, how to treat them, how to rape them, and etc.

Christian Rome only ‘abolished slavery’ if you’re delusional enough to think that slavery and serfdom aren’t the same thing.

Funny thing is the confederate slave owners sure as hell though it was pro slavery. The Christian slaver merchants sure as hell thought it was pro slavery. The crusaders sure as heck thought it was pro slavery.

You don't even need that as throughout the medieval ages Christians happily engaged in the slave trade as long as it wasn't other Christians they enslaved. Also tries to pull the whole serfdom vs slavery distinctions ask him why both are illegal now along with indentured servitude (Because all three were just as wrong)

"Some Christians held slaves despite 2000 years of condemnation from the church, therefor Christianity was pro-slavery."

"Some atheists, in the *explicit name of atheism,* went on 5-year plans of mass genocide against religious individuals; therefor all atheists support mass genocide."

Thank god neither Christians nor atheists are as monolithic as you are pretending.

They objectively and categorically aren't, and calling people delusional for ignorance over political terminology and historical reality is dull.
