Clearly you have not been to the UK, Scottish people are 6ft dicks, so we English are at a significant disadvantage that we are not naturally disadvantaged to be 6ft dicks. So we winlose.
What you lack in dick, you make up in wit. I love you.
Answering the OP,
If your last name and family history with that names mean nothing to you, then it is just a name, and one that deserves to serve only at your pleasure. Slave to the Patriarchy no more
Update on this: I applied for a name change online; turns out it costs around £49 (~$77) to have all the legal stuff sorted out, and some proof of my new identity sent to me (so I can apply for passports, etc). Gonna put it off until my next paycheque...also gonna ask my other friends and probably my family for their opinion.
Your support has convinced me I should probably go ahead with it though
I almost change my name in my 20s because I was so filled with hatred for the way I was raised and all the wonderful things I thought I had missed out on.
...but my reason for doing it was a lot different than yours I'm sure. If I had it to do over ... I don't know ... maybe I still would.
Have sent a text to them both so I'll find out soon enough. My mother probably won't care about the surname since she's divorced from my father, but not sure what she'll think of the first name. My dad is quite laid back, I doubt he'll care that much.

Lucky you. My mom and dad would probably disown me lol.
Meh, I usually manage to defeat objections to these types of things by using a vast amount of logic. A few years back my sister and I decided to go to my Dad's house for Christmas Day (usually we go on Boxing Day), and my mum was quite upset because she wouldn't have us for "Christmas". She isn't religious, but for her Christmas Day is still a massive tradition so it was a big thing, until I pointed out that 25th December is basically an arbitrary day that holds no actual meaning (not even in Christianity), and that we could just as easily celebrate Christmas on the day before or the day after.
